July 11, 2011 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Britain Rock Cats News Release

NEW BRITAIN, CT - Matt Schuld flew into Bradley International Airport earlier this afternoon and was handed the game ball for his first Double-A start just a few hours later. Binghamton's Matt Den Dekker greeted him rudely with a home run and the Mets never looked back in a 5-3 victory over the Rock Cats.

The 23-year-old Schuld was summoned early this morning from Ft. Myers to spot start for the Rock Cats. He arrived at New Britain Stadium just a couple hours before game time. Den Dekker introduced him to the Eastern League by launching a leadoff home run over the center field wall for a 1-0 lead. Schuld settled down to strike out the next batter and escape the inning without further damage.

The story was the same in the inning as the Mets received a solo homer from Raul Reyes to start off the inning.

The B-Mets struck again in the third inning. Schuld hit the first batter he faced, Dusty Ryan, and Allan Dykstra followed with a double to move Ryan to third. Salomon Manriquez then grounded out to shortstop, allowing Ryan to cross the plate. Reyes added an RBI double for the 4-0 advantage. Binghamton tacked on another run in the fourth on an RBI single by Joshua Satin.

The Rock Cats broke up the shutout in the bottom of the fourth. Joe Benson led off with a double to right, moved to third on Chris Parmlee's ground out and scored when Yangervis Solarte lined a double into right field. Nathan Hanson added a two-run single to close the gap, 5-3.

Schuld (0-1) - a native of St. Paul, MN who was signed by his hometown team Twins as a non-drafted free agent out of the University of St. Thomas - allowed five runs on six hits and three walks in four innings.

Tobi Stoner (4-3) scattered six hits for three runs over five innings for the B-Mets. John Lujan notched his sixth save. Binghamton swept the four-game series with the win.
