Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
NEW BRITAIN, CT - The Binghamton Mets plated runs in each of the first four innings and rode them out to a 5-3 victory over New Britain for their season-best fifth straight win Monday at New Britain Stadium. Raul Reyes went 2-for-4 with a double and a homer and Allan Dykstra rapped three hits to lead a nine-hit attack.
Binghamton (35-55) greeted Rock Cats' starter Matt Schuld rudely in the first inning. On the second pitch of the game, Matt den Dekker clocked a leadoff homer to centerfield to put the B-Mets in the driver's seat.
Reyes advanced the lead two in the second inning with a lengthy at-bat which culminated in his sixth home run of the season, a solo blast.
Schuld, who was making his Double-A debut, allowed two more runs in the third. He hit Dusty Ryan with a pitch to start the frame. Dykstra followed with a double to put himself and Ryan in scoring position. Salomon Manriquez plated Ryan with a groundout to short. Reyes followed and smoked a double off the right field wall to bring Dykstra around, making it 4-0.
The B-Mets rounded out their scoring in the fourth. Eric Campbell drew the second of his three walks on the night to begin the frame. Jordany Valdespin replaced him at first on a fielder's choice to second. Valdespin promptly stole second for his team-leading 29th swipe. Two batters later, Josh Satin pushed him across with a single to center which advanced the lead to five.
New Britain (45-43) responded for all of its run-scoring in the bottom of the fourth. With three scoreless innings under his belt, Tobi Stoner gave up a leadoff double to Joe Benson. With one out, Yangervis Solarte split the gap in right-center for a double to score Benson. Jair Fernandez worked out a walk to join Solarte on base. Mike Hollimon's groundout to second moved the runners up and Nate Hanson scored them both with a single to left to draw the Rock Cat within two, 5-3.
Stoner buckled down and fired a scoreless fifth to end his day. He exited to the win after allowing three runs on six hits over five innings.
The bullpen took it the rest of the way for him. Roy Merritt retired 9 of the 10 men he faced to segue to John Lujan in the ninth. Lujan allowed a two-out hit but got Hanson to fly out to end the ballgame, sealing up his sixth save.
Binghamton heads into the Eastern League All-Star break riding high and returns to NYSEG Stadium for a five-game series with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats Thursday at 5:35 PM for a doubleheader. LHP Robert Carson (2-7, 4.27) goes in Game One opposite RHP Chad Jenkins (2-2, 4.17). In Game Two, RHP Brandon Moore (6-7, 4.06) will take the ball against RHP Henderson Alvarez of New Hampshire. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show begins at 5:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
