Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Manchester, NH- On the same day as Major League Baseball's Home Run Derby, Portland Sea Dogs outfielder Jeremy Hazelbaker decided to have a home run derby of his own at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium in Manchester. Hazelbaker swatted a pair of three-run homers on Monday, and Felix Doubront struck out nine batters in five innings, as the Sea Dogs handled the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 9-5.
The Fisher Cats started the scoring in the bottom of the first on a pair of hits. Anthony Gose grounded out to first base on the first pitch of the contest, before Callix Crabbe doubled to left field. Mike McDade followed with an RBI single to right field on a nine-pitch at-bat.
New Hampshire's lead was short-lived, as the Sea Dogs put four runs on the board in the second. With two outs, Oscar Tejeda singled, then promptly stole second. After Mitch Dening walked, Heiker Meneses tied the score on a single to left field, driving in Tejeda. On the very next pitch, Jeremy Hazelbaker gave Portland their first lead of the afternoon, blasting a three-run homer to right for a 4-1 advantage.
The score remained that way until the sixth, when Portland's offense exploded with five more runs. The first run came quickly, as Reynaldo Rodriguez led off the frame with a solo home run to left field. Later in the inning, Oscar Tejeda doubled, then proceeded to score on Mitch Dening's base hit to right field. The two-out magic continued with Heiker Meneses' double to left field, which set the stage for Jeremy Hazelbaker, who ripped his second three-run blast of the day, putting the visitors ahead, 9-1.
The pitching was also strong for the Sea Dogs on this day, as Felix Doubront (1-0) made his first Double-A start since 2009. The lefty picked up the win, going five innings, allowing one run on four hits, while striking out nine. On the other side of the equation, Joel Carreno (7-6) took the loss, allowing four runs, four hits, and three walks, while striking out three, in four innings.
Despite the large margin, the Fisher Cats didn't go away quietly, getting three runs back in the seventh on a couple of long balls. Travis d'Arnaud led off the inning with a walk, before Mark Sobolewski sent him home with a two-run homer to right. Craig Stansberry followed with a solo shot to left field, bringing New Hampshire within five.
The home team got one more run in the ninth, but it wasn't enough, as the Sea Dogs earned their fifth win of the road trip, knocking off the Fisher Cats, 9-5.
The Sea Dogs will now have two days off for the all-star break, before opening a seven-game homestand on Thursday night against the New Britain Rock Cats.
