Surkamp Is EL Pitcher of the Week for Second Time
July 11, 2011 - Eastern League (EL1)
Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
RICHMOND, VA - The Richmond Flying Squirrels, in conjunction with the Eastern League of Professional Baseball Clubs, have announced that left-hander Eric Surkamp has been named Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending July 10th.
The 23-year old has earned his second weekly award of the season after making two appearances during the week, and logging a 1-0 record with an ERA of 2.13. During 12 2/3 innings on the mound, the native of Cincinnati, OH, punched out 23 hitters. On July 5th, technically working in relief during the completion of a suspended game with Trenton, he struck out 11 to break his own franchise record that he had matched four times. On Sunday, he bested that effort, again establishing a new mark for strikeouts in a game with 12 against the Harrisburg Senators. His season total of 114 is already the franchise mark for the Squirrels in their second season, having now passed last year's strikeout leader David Mixon (112).
A sixth round selection of the San Francisco Giants out of North Carolina State University, Surkamp currently leads the Eastern League in ERA (1.78). He was selected as a mid-season All-Star, but will not pitch in the Northeast Delta Dental Eastern League All-Star Game due to the timing of his last start (Sunday).
Surkamp was also named EL POW for the week of May 2nd - 9th. He earns the fourth weekly award of the season for the Squirrels. LHP Ryan Verdugo was named Pitcher of the Week (May 31st - June 6th), and Chris Dominguez was honored as Batter of the Week (June 20th - 27th).
In 2010, he was named California League Pitcher of the Week twice, and also was recognized as both a mid-season and post-season all-star.
The finale of the Squirrels' four-game series with Harrisburg is scheduled at 12:05 PM on Monday afternoon at The Diamond. RHP Daryl Maday (2-6, 4.15) will make the start for the Squirrels against RHP Shairon Martis (6-3, 2.68) for the Senators. Pregame coverage will begin at 11:35 AM on both Sports Radio 910 and SportsRadio910.com.
