Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
RICHMOND, VA - Two big home runs were enough for the Harrisburg Senators (53-36), as they salvaged a series-split with the Richmond Flying Squirrels (47-41), grabbing a, 6-3, win in front of 6,649 at The Diamond on Monday afternoon.
The Senators capitalized on a game-opening walk issued by Squirrels' right-hander Daryl Maday to Chris Rahl to grab an early lead. Rahl stole second base, but Maday got the first two outs of the inning. With two outs, Tyer Moore pulled a single into left field, scoring Rahl for a 1-0 lead. Moore was thrown out at second base on the run-scoring play to end the inning.
Richmond responded immediately in the bottom of the first against Harrisburg righty Shairon Martis. Francisco Peguero led off with a single, and was forced at second by Charlie Culberson. Culberson swiped second base, and scored on a two-out RBI single to right-center field from Chris Dominguez. Like Moore, Dominguez was thrown out at second base, ending the inning after tying the ballgame, 1-1.
Harrisburg pulled ahead for good in the fourth. Bill Rhinehart sparked the uprising with a one-out single. A batter later, Maday walked Archie Gilbert to put two aboard. Tim Pahuta followed and belted a pitch up the zone over the wall in left-center field. The three-run blow was the difference-maker in the ballgame, and put the Sens ahead 4-1. It was Pahuta's sixth home run of the season and second off of Maday.
The Senators put the game away in the sixth inning. Rhinehart started the frame and reached on an error on Richmond first baseman Wes Hodges. Moore followed and drilled a Maday fastball off the scoreboard in left-center field. Moore's 18th of the season extended the Harrisburg lead to 6-1.
The Squirrels did attempt to rally against Martis in the sixth inning, notching a pair of runs to pull within three runs, 6-3. Dominguez started the inning with a single, and Hodges singled behind into left field. Rhinehart misplayed Hodges single, and the error allowed the runners to second and third base. Johnny Monell then cracked a two-run single to score both runners.
Maday (2-7) departed to the loss after six innings, having conceded six runs - five earned. He allowed just four hits - two home runs - walked two and struck out four as he endured his seventh setback of the season.
Martis (7-3) also left after six innings, recording his seventh win of the season. He surrendered three runs - two earned - on nine hits, walked one and struck out ten. A trio of Harrisburg relievers each tossed a scoreless inning to secure the win. Right-hander Hassan Pena handled the seventh, left-hander Cory VanAllen the eighth and right-hander Pat Lehman earned his second save of the season by working the ninth.
The Squirrels are off the next two days for the all-star break. They will return to action in Bowie, MD, on Thursday night at Prince George's Stadium. Richmond will open a four-game series against the Bowie Baysox (Baltimore Orioles) at 7:05 PM.
