Aeros Take Series From SeaWolves

AKRON, OH - The Akron Aeros won the finale of a four-game series against the Erie SeaWolves 6-3 Monday at Canal Park.

With the win, the Aeros (47-44) have taken three of four from Erie and have finished the first half of 2011 over .500.

Right-handed pitcher Joe Gardner earned the win for Akron tossing 5.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits, walking three and striking out five. Right-hander Cory Burns recorded the last five outs to notch his league-best 25th save of the season.

Righty Brooks Brown suffered the loss for the SeaWolves lasting five innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits, walking three and striking out four.

Beau Mills put the Aeros on the board in the bottom of the third inning with a two-run home run.

Akron added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out, the Aeros loaded the bases on three consecutive singles from Juan Diaz, Mills and Chun Chen. Nick Weglarz walked to force home a run and give the Aeros a 3-0 lead. Raul Padron followed with an RBI single scoring Mills and increasing the lead to 4-0. Chen scored on a throwing error to make it 5-0.

The SeaWolves (43-47) answered in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs, Bryan Pounds tripled and scored on a Rawley Bishop single to cut the Akron lead to 5-1. Audy Ciriaco chased Gardner from the game with a single. Tyler Sturdevant replaced Gardner and allowed a two-RBI double to Michael Bertram to make it 5-3.

Akron tacked on a run in the home half of the frame and went on to the win.

The Aeros are off Tuesday and Wednesday for the Eastern League All-Star break. Following the break, Akron will begin a three-game set at Harrisburg on Thursday.
