Wheeling Nailers News Release

WHEELING, WV- Denver Manderson netted two goals and added an assist for the Wheeling Nailers on Saturday night, but he and his teammates were unable to overcome the Trenton Titans. Despite firing just 20 shots on goal, the Titans cashed in for five goals, knocking off the hometown Nailers, 5-3 in front of 2,967 fans at WesBanco Arena.

Just 13 seconds into the contest, the Titans opened the scoring. Ryan Hayes took a wrist shot from the right side that was stopped by Peter Delmas. However, the rebound popped up into the air, then down into the crease, where it was deposited into the net by Jean-Sebastien Berube. The Nailers answered that tally midway through the first period. Denver Manderson fed Christiaan Minella low in the zone, and Minella forced a shot through Dave Caruso, sending loads of stuffed animals onto the ice on Teddy Bear Toss Night. Trenton regained the lead later in the frame, as Rob Bordson found the twine on an unassisted goal from the outside of the left circle.

Midway through the second period, the Nailers pulled even. Patrick Johnson tapped the puck to Denver Manderson, who curled around the back of the net, and flipped in a backhander for his third goal of the season. Unfortunately, the Titans responded, taking advantage of a power play. Jordon Southorn took a shot from the point that got blocked in front of the goal. Jean-Sebastien Berube pounced on the loose puck, and lifted the rebound into the top of the cage.

Adam Presizniuk added to the Trenton lead early in the third period, as Peter Delmas lost control of the puck behind the net. Mitch Versteeg iced the victory for the visitors with an empty net goal, before Denver Manderson netted his second goal of the game on a one-time feed from Tim Priamo, giving the game a 5-3 final score.

Dave Caruso earned the win for the Titans, making 41 saves on 44 shots. Peter Delmas took the loss for the Nailers, allowing four goals on 19 shots.

The Nailers and Titans will meet again on Wednesday night in Trenton, before Wheeling returns home to WesBanco Arena to face the Reading Royals on Friday night at 7:35.
