ESTERO, FL - David Rutherford scored twice including the game winning goal in overtime to left the Florida Everblades over the Gwinnett Gladiators Saturday evening at Germain Arena. The Everblades now pull within three points of the first place Gladiators in a very tight South Division.
Florida took a 1-0 lead at 12:50 of the first period when David Rutherford sniped a wrist shot high into the corner of the net past the glove side of Gwinnett Goaltender Marc Cheverie.
The Everblades extended the lead early in the second period on a heads up play by goaltender Pat Nagle. While Gwinnett was in the midst of a line change, Nagle quickly moved the puck to the far blue line to Matt Beca. Beca charged into the zone on the right wing side and fired a shot twhich was redirected into the net by Rylan Galiardi. The goal was the second in as many nights for Galiardi who put the score at 2-0.
Despite the deficit, Gwinnett orchestrated another come back. Colin Vock put his team on the board 2-1, scoring on a breakaway at 12:48 of the second period. Moments later, David Strathman registered his first goal of the season to tie the game at two with just 35 seconds remaining in the period.
In the third, Andy Brandt tipped a shot past Nagle to give the Gladiators a 3-2 lead. Florida tied the game on a highlight goal at 16:37 of the third period. After a Gwinnett turnover in front, Pitt took the puck on the right side of the crease and lifted the puck underneath the bar for the goal. The goal sent the game to overtime, and the Everblades received a power play opportunity early in the extra session. Rutherford took advantage of the 4-on-3 situation, as he wheeled around the high slot area to the right side wing and fired a shot past Cheverie low on the ice to seal the 4-3 victory with 3:33 remaining in overtime. The win was the second in as many nights for the Blades in overtime, with both scores finishing at 4-3.
