Wheeling Nailers News Release

WHEELING, WV- Friday night's slate of ECHL games began with three teams who had yet to suffer a loss. That number is down to one, and that team is the Adirondack Thunder, who served as the opposition for the Wheeling Nailers at WesBanco Arena. Adirondack's lethal power play converted on three of six chances, creating the difference in a 4-1 win - its sixth in as many tries. Rob Bordson netted two of the goals, while Ken Appleby made 31 saves for Adirondack. Patrick McGrath recorded the lone goal for Wheeling.

Both teams brought their offenses to the table in the opening period, as the Thunder jumped out to a 2-0 lead, before the Nailers rallied to within one. The first marker came from Gunnar Hughes, who redirected Mike Bergin's shot from the middle of the blueline. Former Wheeling forward Alexandre Carrier picked up the second helper on Hughes' first of the year. 2:38 later, Adirondack upped its lead with a power play goal, as Rob Bordson trickled the rebound of David Shields' over the goal line, inside the right post. The Nailers got their first tally with 2:50 left in the frame. Harrison Ruopp's shot from the point was stopped, but Patrick McGrath was in position to punch in the rebound with his backhand.

The Thunder and their dangerous power play were responsible for the lone goal in the middle frame, as they upped their lead to two with 10:49 remaining. Kyle Flanagan found Shields in the left circle, who hesitated long enough to create an opening for Bordson on the right side of the crease. After collecting the puck on his stick, Bordson deposited his second of the tilt.

One more goal was tacked on in the third period, and once again, it came courtesy of an Adirondack man advantage. Mitchell Heard was the goal scorer, drawing assists from Joe Faust and Michael Kirkpatrick, giving the game a 4-1 final score.

Ken Appleby played a big game in goal for the Thunder, stopping 31 of the 32 shots he faced in the winning effort. Franky Palazzese made a few highlight saves for the Nailers, ending the night with 21, as he was saddled with his first loss of the season.

The Nailers will play host to the Quad City Mallards on Saturday, as the team hosts Kids Halloween. The first 1,000 kids will receive a jersey backpack, courtesy of Dick's Sporting Goods, ERB Electric, and West Liberty University. There will also be Trick or Treat and a costume contest, while the popular Zooperstars will be performing their outstanding acts during intermissions.

Individual tickets, season tickets, mini plans, and group tickets are on sale now, with prices starting as low as $10 per seat. For tickets and more information, call the Nailers at (304) 234-GOAL or online at wheelingnailers.com.
