The Beauties Took Down the Beast

The Wheeling Nailers have gotten off to a strong start to the 2015-16 season, winning three of their first four games, including a sweep of a home-and-home series against the Brampton Beast last weekend. On Saturday night, the Nailers burst out to a 4-0 lead in front of a sellout crowd of 5,330 in their home opener, which they eventually won, 5-1. One day later, the two teams met in Brampton, where Wheeling lit the lamp twice, before the game was four minutes old. The Beast rallied to tie the score at two, but the Nailers had the final say, connecting on two power play goals for a 4-3 triumph. Seven different players scored goals in the two games, led by Derek Army and Clark Seymour, who each had two, while Franky Palazzese and Brian Foster both earned one win in goal.

A Thundering Offensive Attack

The Adirondack Thunder enter Friday night with the best record in the ECHL, having won each of their first five games as league members. Offense has been a major reason for Adirondack's success, as the club has scored at least four goals in each of its five victories, racking up an overall total of 22. On Wednesday night, the Thunder gave the Orlando Solar Bears their first defeat of the season, thanks to a 4-2 win at Glens Falls Civic Center. Fans in Eastern New York will have to wait a while to see their team again, as Friday night's game will be the first of six straight away from home for Adirondack. Thus far, the Thunder have played two games at home and three on the road.

Army Topped the League

For the second time in his career, Derek Army received recognition from the ECHL, thanks to his performance in Wheeling's two victories last weekend. Army was named Sher-Wood Hockey ECHL Player of the Week, as he posted a pair of three-point contests, accumulating two goals, four assists, and six points, figuring into the scoring on six of the Nailers' nine goals against the Brampton Beast. Derek previously took home that honor in the final week of the 2014-15 regular season, making him the recipient in two of the last three playing weeks. Army and linemates Jarrett Burton and Riley Brace are first, second, and third on the team in scoring, combining for 16 points in four games.

Bordson an Ambassador for Glens Falls

Adirondack forward Rob Bordson spent each of the last three seasons in the AHL, picking up 73 points in 212 games, before electing to sign with the Thunder this past summer. The 27-year old currently leads the team with nine points in five games, and has helped to kick start the career of rookie linemate Louick Marcotte, who has already tallied five goals and seven points in his first five contests as a pro. During the summer, Bordson was a big help to head coach Cail MacLean in bringing players to Glens Falls, has he had previously played for the AHL's Adirondack Phantoms. Only five of the 24 players on Adirondack's roster were with the team last season in Stockton, while Bordson and Kyle Flanagan both played for the Phantoms.

Meet Our Thunder Buddies

Friday marks the first of three head-to-head meetings between the Nailers and Thunder this season, as well as the first battle ever between the two clubs. Last season, the Thunder were located in Stockton, California, before that team changed its name to Heat and moved up to the AHL, bringing Adirondack into the ECHL picture for the first time in history. Stockton was a member of the ECHL from 2005-15, but never played a single game against Wheeling during that time. Glens Falls has its third team name in as many years, as the Thunder follow in the footsteps of the Adirondack Flames (2014-15) and Adirondack Phantoms (2009-14). The Adirondack Red Wings were the most storied team to play in Glens Falls Civic Center, doing so from 1979-99, capturing four Calder Cups during their tenure. The Nailers will visit that venue on February 12th and 16th to complete the season series.
