Lexington Legends News Release
Three Lexington Legends have been selected to play for the Southern Division team in the South Atlantic League All-Star game June 21. Rosters were announced today (Monday) by South Atlantic League President Eric Krupa.
Shortstop Jiovanni Mier, catcher-designated hitter Chris Wallace and outfielder Adam Bailey were chosen in voting by managers, coaches, front office executives and media.
Mier will start the game at shortstop. A first round draft pick by the Houston Astros in 2009, Mier is batting .249 with five home runs and 27 runs batted in. He was named Lexington's defensive player of the month for April by the Astros' player development department.
Wallace is one of three Southern Division catchers chosen for the game. He is currently fifth in the league in runs batted in with 41, and has hit 11 homers. Wallace, who started the season with a 12-game hitting streak, was named South Atlantic League Player of the Week for the period of April 7-17, which included the season's opening weekend and first full week. Wallace batted .434 (16 hits in 36 at-bats) with five doubles, five home runs and 17 RBI in 10 games. His on-base percentage was .535, and his slugging percentage was 1.000. In one game at Asheville April 17, Wallace hit three home runs and drove in nine runs, one short of the South Atlantic League single-game RBI record. He had five hits in six at-bats in the game.
Bailey was named a utility outfielder for the Southern Division. Through games of June 6, he is batting .312, and is tied for second in the league with 13 home runs. Bailey had a 13-game hitting streak from April 13-28, during which he batted .385 (20 for 52) with four home runs and 10 RBI.
"I'm really happy for our guys and their All-Star selections," said Legends General Manager Andy Shea. "The great thing about these guys is that they are all complete players. They can all hit, run, field, and throw and they all have very high knowledge and appreciation for the game."
The All-Star game will be played at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, Maryland, home of the Delmarva Shorebirds.
