Asheville Boasts Pair of Former ACC Football Standouts
June 7, 2011 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, S.C. - Football season may be more than two months away, but fans of the Charleston RiverDogs have a chance to watch two former gridiron stars take to the diamond on the club's upcoming homestand.
Former Clemson quarterback Kyle Parker and former North Carolina State signal-caller Russell Wilson both come to town with the Asheville Tourists for a three-game series beginning Thursday, June 9, at 7:05 pm.
Lowcountry sports fanatics are especially familiar with Parker, who in 2009-10 became the first NCAA Division I athlete to pass for 20 touchdowns and clout 20 home runs in the same season. Parker helped the Tigers reach the College World Series stage in Omaha in the spring, and returned for his sophomore season between the hash marks last fall to spur Clemson to the Meineke Car Care Bowl.
Parker's football prowess may be behind him, but his baseball career is just beginning for the Colorado Rockies affiliate. Rated the No. 6 prospect in the 2010 Draft by *Baseball America*, Parker is batting .286 with seven home runs and leads the South Atlantic League with 43 RBI.
A three-year starter at NC State, Wilson excelled as an athletic dual threat for the Wolfpack, tossing 76 touchdowns and running for more than 1,000 yards and 17 more scores by himself. A fourth round pick of the Rockies in the 2010 draft, the second baseman is hitting .218 with two home runs and eight RBI, as well as 12 stolen bases.
All three games with the Tourists (Thursday, June 9 - Saturday, June 11) are slated for 7:05 pm first pitches. For more ticket information, contact the RiverDogs ticket office at (843) 577-DOGS (3647) or purchase tickets online at www.riverdogs.com.
