West Virginia sent 12 men to the plate in the inning, keyed by a single from Elias Diaz that plated a pair. Delmarva scored three runs in the top of the seventh and the Power could not complete a second rally, putting the tying run on base in the bottom of the ninth, but could not capitalize on the opportunity.
SAL ALL-STARS: Brandon Cumpton, Dan Grovatt, and Jameson Taillon were selected to represent the Power in the 2011 South Atlantic League All-Star Game in June 21. Cumpton is 6-4 this season with a 5.11 ERA, but steam rolled though May with a 6-0 record and a 1.18 earned run average. Grovatt is batting .297 over 53 games with one home runs and 21 runs batted in. Taillon, the second overall pick in the 2010 draft, is 2-1 with a 3.71 earned run average during his first professional season.
BRING ON THE BIRDS: West Virginia trails the all-time set 43-38, and have gone 26-20 at home against Delmarva since 2005. The Power took 10 of 18 last season, including nine of 13 at Appalachian Power Park. West Virginia and Delmarva will meet five more times this season after this series; the final five days of the regular slate in September. West Virginia won three out of four games at Delmarva a week and a half ago.
2011 DRAFT: The Pittsburgh Pirates selected right-handed pitcher Gerrit Cole with the top choice in the 2011 First Year Player Draft last night. Cole, a junior from UCLA, went 6-8 with a 3.31 ERA for the Bruins this season but impressed scouts with a fastball that tops out around 100 miles per hour. Cole was also drafted by the New York Yankees in 2008, but chose instead to honor his commitment to UCLA.
BACK FOR MORE: Rogelio Noris hit 15 home runs for West Virginia during the 2010 season and has added four to that total so far this season. Stephen Chapman holds the single-season record with 24, which is also the most by any player during his respective stint with West Virginia. Noris is tied for fourth all-time in Power history with 19 career home runs, matching Stefan Wilson and trailing only Chapman, Kenny Holmberg (22), and Kyle Morgan (20).
WHITE TO THE DL: The Pittsburgh Pirates placed Cole White on the disabled list on Friday, retroactive to June 1. White appeared in one game for the Power on May 31, going 1-2 before leaving with an injury sustained while running out a single. To replace White on the active roster, Pittsburgh promoted Chase Lyles from Extended Spring. Lyles was selected in the 32nd round of the 2010 draft from Northwestern State (LA) University, and played in 55 games for State College last season.
FSL ALL-STARS: Five former Power players were named to the 2011 Florida State League South Divison All-Star squad on Thursday. Kyle McPherson, Brett Lorin, Ramon Cabrera, Jarek Cunningham, and Aaron Baker will represent the Bradenton Marauders in the mid-season classic, to be played one June 18 at Clearwater. Cabrera and Baker were also named All-Stars in 2010 while playing for West Virginia. The 2011 South Atlantic League All-Star teams will be announced on Tuesday.
POWER POINTS: The Power will make up the May 3 rainout against Greensboro on June 14 at 5:30 pm as part of a doubleheader... Victor Black has not allowed a base hit in any of his first four appearances so far this season, and has only allowed on base runner over six innings of work. .
