Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (June 7, 2011) -- A fifth inning error by the Kannapolis Intimidators opened the door for a three-run triple by Edward Salcedo to provide the difference in a 5-2 loss to the Rome Braves at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium on Tuesday night. Kannapolis dropped the series at home to Rome, 2 games to 1.

The Braves took advantage of an Intimidators error in the fifth inning when a ground ball got through Drew Lee at second base leaving runners in scoring position with two outs. Intimidators starter Spencer Arroyo walked the next batter to load the bases for Salcedo, who smacked a bases-clearing triple to give the Braves a 4-0 lead.

Kenny Gilbert singled to lead off the bottom of the fifth, and Ross Wilson doubled him over to third. Gilbert scored on a wild pitch from Braves starter Dan Jurik. Trayce Thompson brought home Wilson with a sacrifice fly, cutting the Braves lead to 4-2 after five innings, but the Intimidators would not score again.

The Braves added a run in the eighth off Terance Marin before Wes Whisler came in to close out the inning. Jake Wilson pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for Kannapolis. Arroyo (3-4) tossed seven innings in a losing effort, allowing four runs (one earned) on six hits with five strikeouts and a walk.

Rome's Matt Suschak (2-0) earned the win with three scoreless innings of relief of Dan Jurik, who allowed two runs in four innings of work, pitching to the first three batters of the fifth inning before being lifted for Suschak. Tyler Hess worked two scoreless innings for his fifth save of the season.

The Intimidators have Wednesday off before beginning a three-game series in Greensboro, N.C., on Thursday against the Grasshoppers. Kannapolis returns to Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium on Sunday, June 12, against the Delmarva Shorebirds.
