Five GreenJackets, Cumpton Headed to All-Star Game
June 7, 2011 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - For the second straight year, the Augusta GreenJackets will be well represented at the South Atlantic League All-Star Game. Five GreenJackets - including Pitching Coach Steve Kline - will represent Augusta at the league's All-Star Game on Tuesday June 21st at 7:35 p.m. at Arthur Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, Maryland - the home of the Delmarva Shorebirds.
Two GreenJackets infielders - second baseman Carlos Willoughby and third baseman Adam Duvall - will start for the Southern Division at their respective positions. In addition, starting pitcher Taylor Rogers and closer Stephen Harrold will help fill out the Southern Division pitching staff.
Willoughby and Duvall have both made regular contributions that show up among the league's best efforts on a consistent basis. Willoughby currently leads the league with 24 stolen bases while Duvall's 14 home runs are tied with Hagerstown's Bryce Harper - a fellow All-Star - for the league lead in the category. In addition, both contribute to the success of a GreenJackets infield that has turned a league-best 74 double plays this season.
On the mound, both Rogers and Harrold have been valuable parts of Kline's pitching staff. Rogers has a 2.67 ERA that is currently the sixth-best mark in the league and has been a winner in three of his last four starts. Harrold's eight saves are tied for the fourth-most in the league and though he hasn't logged enough innings to qualify as a league-leader, his 2.30 ERA is the staff's best.
Kline was asked to serve as Pitching Coach by Savannah manager Ryan Ellis, who was voted to serve in the same post for the Southern Division All-Stars. Kline is currently in his third season as Pitching Coach for the GreenJackets after spending 11 seasons as one of baseball's best left-handed setup options. Former GreenJacket Dan Runzler often credits Kline for his rise to the big leagues in 2009 during Kline's first season with the GreenJackets.
In addition to the five GreenJackets, the Augusta area will be represented by Brandon Cumpton of the West Virginia Power. Cumpton, who played for both Greenbrier High and Georgia Tech, was selected to represent the Northern Division after going 6-0 with a 1.18 ERA (5 ER/38 IP) in six starts during the month of May.
Ellis and Kline will be joined on the Southern Division staff by Savannah Hitting Coach Jose Carreno. The Northern Division manager will be Brian Daubach of the Hagerstown Suns. Taylor Whitenton of the Savannah Sand Gnats will be the Southern Division starting pitcher and will face Lakewood's David Buchanan, who'll start for the North. Harper, considered by many to be the top prospect in all of Minor League Baseball, was the leading vote getter in either division.
