Three-Goal Second Lifts Florida over Greenville
January 29, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release
Estero, FL - The Greenville Swamp Rabbits (20-18-6), proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack, scored two first-period goals in a span of 35 seconds on Friday, but surrendered four unanswered tallies in a 4-2 setback to the Florida Everblades (30-11-1) at Germain Arena.
Richard Nejezchleb and Darian Dziurzynski each recorded a goal for Greenville, while Michael St. Croix assisted on both tallies.
Greenville opened the scoring at 8:07 of the first period when Nejezchleb capitalized on a turnover in the Everblades' zone. From the right corner, Scott Fleming prompted a takeaway and slipped the puck to St. Croix, who in turn centered a pass for Nejezchleb. The rookie forward settled the puck, took an extra stride to disrupt goaltender Rasmus Tirronen, and buried a forehand shot past Tirronen's right leg pad.
Just 35 seconds later, Dziurzynski made it 2-0 with his 12th goal of the season. Following another Everblades' giveaway, St. Croix found Dziurzynski at the high slot, where the fourth-year pro dropped a snap shot off the crossbar and in.
Florida responded with four unanswered goals, including three in the middle frame, to grab the lead for good. Corey Cowick cut the Everblades' deficit in half with a power-play tally at 10:24 of the second period. With Tyler Elbrecht in the box for interference, Cowick cleaned up a rebound opportunity created by Corey Syvret's one-time blast from the right circle to make it 2-1.
Maxime St. Cyr followed that up with a shorthanded goal just over four minutes later to tie the game. The speedy first-year forward gained possession in the neutral zone and skated ahead on a breakaway before beating netminder Allen York with a low shot from the doorstep.
Fort Myers native Logan Roe netted game-winner in the final second of the middle frame with his second career tally. With time winding down, Justin Agosta gathered the puck at the top of the left circle and sent a sharp pass to the back post, where Roe buried a one-timer as the horn sounded. The officiating crew confirmed that the goal was good, and directed both teams to their respective dressing rooms, opting not to take another faceoff at center ice.
Florida capped the scoring at 19:20 of the third period when Matt Willows notched an empty-netter for his team-leading 16th goal of the season, which also places him tops among ECHL rookies in that category.
Greenville finished the game 0-for-3 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill. York (4-6-2) stopped 23 shots and suffered his first regulation loss on the road since November 7, while Tirronen (3-0-0) halted 27 chances in the Florida win.
The Swamp Rabbits outshot the Everblades 29-27.
