Gameday: Adirondack vs. Reading
January 29, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Adirondack Thunder News Release
TONIGHT'S MATCHUP: Tonight is the beginning of a six-game home stand for the Adirondack Thunder as they take on the Reading Royals on back-to-back nights at the Glens Falls Civic Center. The Thunder will be looking for their 13th win of the year on home ice and will to avoid losing four in a row for the first time in franchise history.
KENT TOUCH THIS: With Ken Appleby's recall to Albany of the AHL and Drew Fielding claimed on waivers by the Brampton Beast, Kent Simpson has taken the reins as Adirondack's number one between the pipes. In eight games this season, Simpson has compiled a 5-1-2 record, complimenting a 2.35 goals against average and a .925 save percentage. The 6'3" netminder has also recorded two shutouts and was named ECHL Goaltender of the Week for the week of January 11.
DRESSED TO KILL: Adirondack has been dominant on the penalty kill over their last eleven games, allowing just one power-play goal in that span. The Thunder have killed off 40 of their past 41 shorthanded attempts, conceding only to Manchester last Friday and they have matched that number during that span with a shorthanded goal from Gunnar Hughes on January 9 against South Carolina. The Thunder's current run has moved them from 19th in the ECHL at 80.5% to 14th in the league at 84.4%.
DON'T BURY THE LEAD: Michael Kirkpatrick collected another point for the Thunder on Sunday afternoon through his first period power-play goal in Manchester. The marker was Kirkpatrick's team leading 15th goal of the season which also makes him one of the ECHL's top rookies, tied for fifth in points. Defenseman Ryan Constant also collected an assist on the play, deadlocking him with center Mitchell Heard for the team lead.
BRAND NEW DANA: Dana Fraser scored his seventh goal of the season last Sunday against the Monarchs, finishing a play started by Alex Carrier and Gunnar Hughes. Fraser has scored five points (3-2-5) so far for the month of January, already making the beginning of 2016 his highest scoring month to date in the league. The Tatamagouche, NS native is also one of six active Thunder players with seven goals or more.
A ROYAL RUMBLE: The visiting Reading Royals will make the most of an opportunity to climb towards a playoff spot against the Thunder. Reading has, however, won just once against the Thunder so far this season. The Royals are led by forwards Robbie Czarnik (17 goals) and Justin Crandall (31 assists, 42 points) while Martin Ouelette has been the leader between the pipes with a 2.00 GAA and a .916 save percentage.
