Quad City Mallards News Release

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Curtis Valk scored twice and added two assists as the host Kalamazoo Wings (17-19-5) scored six straight goals- including five in the second period- before surviving a third period Quad City Mallards (19-19-3) comeback bid to claim a 6-5 victory Friday night.

Valk started the second period Kalamazoo onslaught mere moments after Matt Carey's wrist shot from the top of the left wing circle had given the Mallards a 2-0 lead just 51 seconds into the period. 25 seconds later Valk got the Wings on the scoreboard for the first time from the side of the net. Justin Kovacs tied the score at two from the doorstep at 4:35. Tyler Shattock's blast from the left wing circle gave the Wings their first lead at the 11:12 mark and Ludwig Bloomstrand's blast from the left circle caromed off the post, off Mallard goaltender Brody Hoffman an into the net just 38 seconds later to stretch the gap to 4-2. Kalamazoo was on the power play when Valk capped off the Wings' second period outburst by one-timing home his second goal from the slot at 18:22.

After David Jacobson replaced Hoffman at the start of the third period, Dane Fox widened the Kalamazoo advantage to 6-2 from the slot at 6:42 of the third. That goal would prove decisive after the Mallareds battled back with three third period goals of their own. Miles Koules scored the Mallards' third of the night from the high slot just 65 seconds after Fox's goal. Gibson drove a power play goal home through traffic to trim deficit to 6-4 at 12:07, but by the time Carey made it 6-5 by sneaking in a sharp angle backhander, just 3.6 seconds remained.

What proved to a wild evening got off to a relatively quiet start. The Mallards' Matt Neal scored the only goal of the first period just over five minutes into the game while tumbling in the slot.

The Mallards return to action on the road tomorrow night against the Cincinnati Cyclones. The Mallards next play at home next Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. against the Rapid City Rush.
