January 29, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Manchester Monarchs News Release
ORLANDO, Fla. - Derek Arnold's shootout goal in the fourth round gave the Manchester Monarchs the 4-3 win and a three-game sweep of the Orlando Solar Bears, Friday Night at the Amway Center.
The Monarchs (28-12-1-4) completed the three-game sweep of the Solar Bears (17-18-2-4), and have now won a season high six straight games.
Arnold got the scoring started with a power-play goal, his 13th of the season, at 2:53 of the first period. Maxim Kitsyn received a pass in the high slot and fired on net. Solar Bears net minder, Ryan Massa, made the initial save, but Arnold was on the doorstep to put home the rebound to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead.
Alex Guptill gave the Monarchs a 2-0 advantage with his 12th of the season at 15:55 of the period. Matt MacKenzie sent a wrist shot from the blue line that deflected off of a defender's stick and right to Guptill right in front of the cage, where he buried the chance to send the Monarchs into intermission with a two-goal lead.
Rylan Schwartz cut the Monarchs lead in half with his 9th goal of the season at 9:16 of the second period. An Eric Faille pass to Schwartz in the high slot for a one-time shot attempt beat Monarchs goaltender, Colin Stevens, glove-side high, ending Stevens' shutout streak at 137:00.
The Solar Bears tied the game on T.J. Foster's 16th of the season at 15:38 of the period. Schwartz sent a wrist shot from the blue line toward traffic in front of Stevens. The puck deflected to Foster where he put home the rebound.
Orlando claimed the lead for the first time in the three-game-series with Johnny McInnis' 12th goal of the season at 18:32 of the second period.
Brady Vail sent a wrist shot from the point toward the net where McInnis redirected it past the glove of Stevens, sending Orlando into the locker room with a 3-2 lead after two periods.
Matt Leitner scored the equalizer at 8:33 of the third period. Leitner's 9th of the season was set up by an Alex Lintuniemi pass from the left circle. Leitner received the puck on the doorstep and tapped home the game-tying goal, sending the game to overtime.
After a scoreless 3-on-3 overtime period, the two teams went to a shootout. The lone goal was scored in the fourth round of shooters by Arnold.
The Monarchs are back on the ice Wednesday night (7 p.m.), when they make their first trip to Reading to face the Royals.
