January 29, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Quad City Mallards News Release
Mallards Notes
Last Game
Rhett Bly scored and added an assist, Cody Sharib piled up three assists and Shane Owen made 27 saves while Ryan Tesink provided the Mallard goal as the host Indy Fuel defeated the Mallards 3-1 Saturday night.
Race
The Mallards have dropped into fourth place in the Midwest Division. Back-to-back losses in Indianapolis last weekend pushed the Fuel into second place and dropped the Mallards into a tie for third with Cincinnati. Cincinnati's victory over Indy Wednesday evening lifted the Cyclones into sole possession of the third spot and consigned the Mallards to fourth.
Sweep
The Mallards were swept by the Fuel last weekend. A 2-1 loss last Friday preceded last Saturday's setback.
Skid
The Mallards have lost three straight games. Their last win was a 2-1 victory over the IceMen in Evansville on January 16.
On the Road
Tonight's game is the third of five straight on the road for the Mallards, who visit Cincinnati tomorrow evening and Toledo Sunday.
Drought
The Mallards have scored a total of just four goals while dropping their last three games. The Mallards have scored two goals or fewer in each of their last four games and have produced a total of just six goals during that stretch. They have dropped to twenty-fifth in the ECHL in goal scoring (2.58 per game).
Slow Starts
The Mallards have been outscored 7-0 in the first period while dropping their last three games. The Mallards gave up three first period goals without reply over their two losses last weekend. They fell behind 2-0 three minutes and 14 seconds into Friday's game and allowed the only goal of the first period the following evening.
Busy
The Mallards this weekend play three games in three cities in 48 hours. This is the sixth of eight stretches of three games in three nights for the Mallards this season.
Deficit
The Mallards are over .500 despite having been outscored 117-103 this season.
Between the Pipes
Rookie Brody Hoffman last weekend shined while making his first career back-to-back starts. Despite suffering a pair of losses, Hoffman stopped 58 of 62 Indy shots to post a 2.02 goals against average and .936 save percentage for the weekend. Hoffman has now appeared in four straight games, a season high for a Mallard goaltender. Steve Michalek, who is now with Iowa, is tied for tenth in the ECHL in save percentage (.922).
Streaking
Austin Coldwell has recorded 11 points (one goal and ten assists) in his last nine games.
Iron Mike
Among defensemen, Mike Monfredo is tied for fourth in the ECHL in assists (20) and tied for sixth in points (24).
Head to Head
Tonight's game is the fourth and final meeting this season between the Mallards and Wings. The Mallards have gone 2-1-0 against Kalamazoo. This is the Mallards' first road game against the Wings since they fell in Kalamazoo 3-1 on February 23, 2007. The Mallards and Wings competed against each other in the United Hockey League between 2000 and 2007. The Mallards have now gone 25-20-7 in 52 all-time meetings with the Wings. They have gone 10-10-2 in Kalamazoo.
Special Teams
The Mallards have failed to convert their last twelve power plays and have scored on just one of their last 25 man advantages. The Mallards rank sixteenth in the ECHL on the power play (16.2 percent). They have survived their foes' last ten power plays to climb to fourth in the league in penalty killing (86.4 percent).
