Norfolk Admirals News Release

NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk Admirals blew out the South Carolina Stingrays, 8-2, Friday night at Scope Arena in the team's largest offensive output of the season.

The onslaught began at 4:48 in the opening frame with a slap shot from Samuel Noreau as he stepped over the centerline. South Carolina netminder Mark Dekanich knocked down the effort, which deflected out to the left circle to Scott Allen. The rookie whacked a put-back attempt between Dekanich's pads for the 1-0 lead. Minutes later, Gabriel Verpaelst's one-timer at 6:49 from the top of the slot raced by Dekanich through bodies screening him in front to make it 2-0.

With less than a minute left in the first, Allen struck on the man advantage. Alexis Loiseau backhanded the puck from the right boards out in front to Greg Chase, who yanked a no-look pass behind him to Allen alone on the doorstep for the easy 3-0 cushion.

Another power-play opportunity led to a 4-0 lead just before the intermission. A shot from Loiseau leaked through Dekanich's legs, and Chase was there to push it over the line with 8.6 seconds left in the opening frame. The Stingrays then swapped Dekanich for Vitek Vanecek in the crease.

After an explosive first period, the Admirals started off the second with another mark on the board at 4:34, edging them into a five-goal advantage after Chase netted his second of the night with help from Michael Pelech and Verpaelst.

The Stingrays finally responded with a goal at 19:24 in the second when David Pacan received a feed from Paul Rodrigues. Pacan's laser from the right boards reached the back of the Norfolk net, resting the score at 5-1 at the end of the second.

Just 1:11 into the final frame, Pelech planted a sixth goal in South Carolina's net, and scored again at 4:42 for his second marker of the night. The Admirals led 7-1.

Chase completed the hat trick in transition with Steven Whitney at 8:39, his first three-goal game of his young career. South Carolina answered at 8:58 before the misery finally ended for the Stingrays to the tune of an 8-2 Admirals victory.

Nic Riopel walled off 26 of 28 shots. Dekanich and Vanecek each split Norfolk's total shot count, both saving 10 of 14 and combining to allow eight goals on 28 attempts. The Admirals capitalized on four of 10 man advantages, and shut out South Carolina on five power-play opportunities.

The Admirals will host the Stingrays again Saturday night at 7:15 p.m.
