Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
The Isotopes (65-56) hit two home runs for a second straight night and plated two in the ninth but it was not enough to chase down Tacoma (64-57) in a 7-6 defeat. Alex Castellanos (2-for-5, 2 R, RBI, HR) and Scott Van Slyke (2-for-3, R, 2 RBI, HR) recorded a multi-hit game and each homered.
The Isotopes trailed by three in the ninth when Chili Buss led off with a walk and Brian Barden was hit in the head by a pitch putting runners on first and second with one out. Barden would stay in the game. Back-to-back singles by Rusty Ryal and Matt Angle scored Justin Sellers and Barden drawing Albuquerque to within one on Tacoma. Jonathan Arias retired the next two hitters closing the door on the game.
Matt Magill allowed three runs through the first two innings but settled in to hurl four scoreless innings before departing. He went six innings for his third consecutive start. The righty walked four hitters but struck out eight.
Alex Castellanos smacked an opposite-field solo homer to right putting the Isotopes on the board in the third inning after the club fell in an early 3-0 hole. He has 18 long balls on the season, ranking first among 2013 Isotopes hitters.
Scott Van Slyke followed by drilling a two-run homer into left field, tying the game at three. He has two homers in as many nights and now has 12 on the season. The first baseman tallied his seventh multi-RBI and 17th multi-hit game of the season.
Elian Herrera scored in the eighth without the benefit of a hit. He walked and scored on three wild pitches.
Stephen Fife (1-3, 3.86) appeared in his first game since rejoining the Isotopes on August 8 entering in the seventh. The righty allowed the go-ahead run and an additional run on four hits in the frame but benefited from some good defensive plays to retire the side. Tony Gwynn Jr. threw out Ty Kelly at third base from centerfield in the inning. Fife followed with a scoreless eighth inning of work. He finished his two innings with a walk and a strikeout while allowing two runs on five hits suffering the loss in his first relief appearance.
Peter Moylan stepped in to pitch the ninth and gave up his first runs in five appearances. The righty surrendered two runs on two hits but he also fanned two hitters. Taijuan Walker (3-2, 3.73) earned the win tossing six innings of three-run baseball surrendering five hits.
Albuquerque and Tacoma complete their only regular season series tomorrow at 1:35 PM MDT. Right-handed Red Patterson (6-4, 3.43) will be opposed by the Rainiers' righty Blake Beavan (4-4, 5.16). Catch all of the game action on 610 AM "The Sports Animal" with Josh Suchon on the call.
