Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Las Vegas, Nev. - The Oklahoma City RedHawks were limited to just one run and three hits by the Las Vegas 51s pitching staff and fell 4-1 before 4,490 at Cashman Field Saturday night.
Las Vegas starting pitcher Rafael Montero hurled seven innings and allowed just one run and two hits. He struck out a season-high nine and walked two.
Montero (4-3) combined with 51s relievers Greg Burke, Robert Carson, and John Church to scatter three hits and allow only one runner to reach scoring position. The quartet racked up 11 strikeouts with three walks. Oklahoma City's three hits tied a season low for a nine-inning game.
The RedHawks' one run came early, as both teams traded home runs in the first inning. With two outs in the top of the inning, George Springer crushed the first pitch he saw well over the left-center field fence to give the RedHawks (69-52) an early 1-0 edge.
The lead was short-lived, though. Kirk Nieuwenhuis led off the bottom of the inning with a solo shot the opposite way out to left field to tie things up.
Las Vegas (64-55) threatened to take the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. With a runner at third base and one out, Zach Lutz sent a ground ball to second baseman Jimmy Paredes. Paredes threw home, and RedHawks catcher Rene Garcia sustained a collision with Travis d'Arnaud and held on to the ball to record the out. Brandon Hicks then struck out to end the inning.
The 51s were able to break the tie in the bottom of the sixth. With two on and two out, Hicks singled to left field to score both runners and give Las Vegas a 3-1 lead.
Matt den Dekker provided another key two-out hit in the bottom of the eighth inning, and his RBI single extended Las Vegas' lead to 4-1.
RedHawks starting pitcher Jake Buchanan turned in his fifth-straight quality start since the All-Star Break but picked up the loss. Buchanan (4-3) allowed three runs and seven hits over six innings. He struck out four and walked two, marking just the second time all season he's walked more than one batter in a game.
The RedHawks will try and earn a split in the four-game series when they meet the 51s Sunday night at 9:05 p.m. central time. Live coverage begins at 8:35 p.m. on AM 1340 "The Game," 1340thegame.com, or through the free IHeartRadio app.
