Memphis Redbirds News Release
RENO, Nev. - The Memphis Redbirds scored four runs off reliever Kevin Munson in the eighth inning to come-from-behind and top the Reno Aces, 6-4, on Sunday afternoon at Aces Ballpark in the finale of a four-game series.
Trailing 3-2 with the bases loaded and one out, first baseman Brock Peterson blooped a two-run single beneath Tony Campana's glove in center. Pinch hitter Justin Christian and shortstop Greg Garcia then followed with RBI singles.
Memphis (59-63) won the final two games of the series to salvage a four-game series split. Combined with an Omaha loss to Sacramento earlier in the day, Memphis is now only one game back in the PCL American Northern Division.
Peterson finished 1-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored. Leadoff hitter Mike O'Neill went 3-for-5 with a run scored while Garcia added two hits.
Memphis scored runs in back-to-back innings for a 2-0 advantage. Chad Huffman went deep with two outs in the top of the second inning for the first run, his ninth of the season. Peterson later worked a bases-loaded walk in the third for the next run.
Reno manufactured three runs in the bottom of the fourth to go ahead at 3-2. After Chris Owings lined a double to left, Mike Jacobs uncorked his 14th home run over the right field wall. Later in the frame after a Tyler Bortnick single, Alfredo Marte hammered an RBI double to left.
Bortnick tripled and scored Reno's final run in the ninth on a Brad Snyder single.
Both starting pitchers came away with no-decisions. Redbirds starter Boon Whiting was charged with three runs on five hits with five strikeouts in five innings. Arizona Diamondbacks rehabber and Reno starter Trevor Cahill gave up a pair of runs on five hits in seven frames.
Keith Butler struck out three over two scoreless in relief of Whiting to come away with the win. Deryk Hooker pitched a shutout frame before Fernando Salas recorded his ninth save of the season and second in as many days.
The Redbirds continue with their road trip and face the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (Triple-A Rockies) for a four-game series. Memphis dropped three of four to the Sky Sox at AutoZone Park last season.Memphis will send left-hander Nick Additon (8-6, 4.04) to the mound for the 7:35 pm CT series opener at Security Service Field. Colorado Springs Sky Sox will counter with right-hander Sean Gallagher (0-1, 4.00).
