Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Despite a solid start by Jake Brigham, the Round Rock Express (63-59) blew a late lead in an 11-5 defeat at the hands of the Salt Lake Bees (70-52) in the series finale Sunday night at Dell Diamond.
Brigham logged 7.0 innings, allowed five runs (four earned) and exited with the game tied at five, but the E-Train bullpen surrendered six runs over the final two frames to suffer the loss.
Salt Lake got the scoring started in the second, tagging Brigham for two runs on two hits, while taking advantage of an Express error to take the early lead. A double down the left field line kick started the Bees offense as left fielder Roberto Lopez followed two batters later with a triple to right, just out of the outstretched glove of a diving Jared Hoying. With the game's first score in, a misplayed ball at second allowed the second run to cross the plate, giving the Bees a 2-0 advantage.
Third baseman Robinson Chirinos answered in the bottom of the second, belting his eighth home run of the season, cutting Salt Lake's lead in half at 2-1.
Trailing by just a run, Brigham settled in and gave the Express offense a chance to rally in the coming innings.
Round Rock broke through in the fourth, loading the bases with two outs for center fielder Jim Adduci who ripped a two-run single to right to give the Express its first lead of the evening. The center fielder took it upon himself to set up the next run, swiping second base for his second steal of the game. On the play, catcher Luke Carlin's throw was off target, allowing shortstop Guilder Rodriguez to score from third and put the E-Train in front 4-2.
Chirinos came through in the clutch once more in the fifth, singling in second baseman Yangervis Solarte with a two-out knock to extend Round Rock's lead to three at 5-2.
After stringing together four straight scoreless innings, Brigham was touched up with a pair of long balls in the seventh, the first a two-run shot off the bat of Carlin to pull the Bees within one. Two batters later, designated hitter Peter Bourjos tied the game with a homer of his own, a solo blast to left leaving the Express and Bees knotted at five apiece.
Brigham was lifted after the seventh, giving way to side-winder Johan Yan out of the Express bullpen. The Bees greeted Yan with a single and triple to take a one-run lead. Salt Lake was far from done, going on to score four more runs in the frame in the process of tagging Yan for five runs on five hits, doubling up the Express 10-5.
The Bees tacked on a solo home run in the ninth off Express reliever Justin Miller to make the final score 11-5. Yan (2-2) suffered the loss after his rocky outing, while Jason Urquidez (1-0) picked up the win in relief.
The Express continues an eight-game homestand with the series opener Monday night against the Tacoma Rainiers at 7:05 p.m. Round Rock will send RHP Josh Lindblom (8-2, 2.39 ERA) to the mound to face Tacoma's southpaw James Paxton (7-9, 4.42 ERA). Monday night at Dell Diamond will feature $1.00 hot dogs and sodas, presented by Mrs Baird's and will also be Tyson Foods Night.
