Stingrays Take Series Finale Behind 53 Shot Barrage
November 29, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Biloxi, MS - The South Carolina Stingrays peppered Ryan Munce with 53 shots en route to 2-1 victory over the Mississippi Sea Wolves at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum on Brad Farynuk's third goal of the season.
"We came out with a lot more intensity tonight," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "Things didn't come easy for us tonight, but we kept fighting and got a much needed win."
The first period saw the Rays begin to pile on shots. After out shooting the Sea Wolves 16-3 in the first period they skated to the locker room with no score.
The second period was more of the same until Paul Kelly put in a rebound for his third goal of the season at 17:46. The goal was assisted by Victor Dovgan and Trent Campbell and gave the Rays a 1-0 lead. The lead was short lived as Mississippi tied things up at 19:01 on Pat Oliveto's second goal of the year.
In the third period the Rays continued to take shot after shot until finally, at 19:14, Farynuk got his third goal of the year to give the Rays their second lead of the night, 2-1. The goal was assisted by Matt Scherer and Pierre-Luc O'Brien. The goal was the difference maker as the Rays, on 53 shots, got two goals, enough to win their 11th game of the year.
The winning goaltender was Michal Neuvirth who stopped 11 of the 12 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Munce who stopped 51 of the 53 shots he faced. The Rays went 0-5 on the power play while killing off all four short handed situations they faced.
The Rays will be back in action on Tuesday night when they return home to the comfy confines of the North Charleston Coliseum to take on the Gwinnett Gladiators. Game time will be at 7:05 P.M.
