Charlotte Checkers News Release
Augusta, GA. - The Checkers power play proved to be deadly as they struck for four goals while on the man advantage on their way to a 6-2 victory over the Augusta Lynx.
The Lynx scored the first goal of the contest during the first period when a point shot from Augusta defenseman B.J. Crum hit the stick of Checkers blueliner Chris Murray and flipped over the shoulder of goalie Jeff Jakaitis at 15:45 putting the home team up 1-0. Later, Checkers forward Ryan Hillier scored his first professional goal on Augusta goalie Mike Brodeur after he shot in a rebound off a point shot from Julien Brouillette at 18:34 on the power play. This tied the game at 1-1 after twenty minutes.
The Checkers got their first lead of the contest when Tomas Zaborksy found a loose puck in the crease during a power play and shoveled it past Brodeur at 3:54 putting his team up 2-1. Hillier scored his second of the game when Checkers forward PJ Corsi centered a pass which he knifed through the pads of the Lynx goalie. This gave Charlotte a 3-1 lead. The Checkers would add two more power play goals as the period continued. The first scored by Jeff Miles on a point shot at 14:51 and the second scored by the returning Lee Falardeau at 17:27. Charlotte ended the second frame with a 5-1 lead.
The final period had the Lynx get closer when Brian Ihnacak fired a shot past Jakaitis at 2:53 making it a 5-2 game in favor of the Checkers. Later, Mike Bayrack took a nice feed from Tomas Zaborsky and blasted a shot that beat Brodeur at 7:51 extending the Checkers advantage to 6-2 which would be the final score.
