Stingrays Silence Thunder with 5-1 Victory Friday Night

GLENS FALLS, NY - The South Carolina Stingrays charged out of the gate Friday night to earn a 5-1 victory over the Adirondack Thunder at the Glens Falls Civic Center. Colin Mulvey had a pair of goals, Mark Dekanich stopped 30 shots and Trevor Gillies fought for the first time as a member of the Stingrays in the win.

When the first period came to a close, South Carolina led by a score 3-0. Andrew Rowe opened the scoring at 6:33, accepting a Ryan Ruikka pass and beating goaltender Kent Simpson over the blocker to give the Stingrays a 1-0 lead. The goal was Rowe's seventh of the season.

Scoring wouldn't be the only fireworks in the first period. Gillies dropped the gloves for the first time this season at 10:03 right off a faceoff with Adirondack's Luke Curadi. Gillies got several strong lefts to connect on the rookie Curadi and the scrap brought the fans to their feet in Glens Falls.

The Stingrays would respond to the fight with a pair of goals. Mulvey scored his ninth, and team-leading 10th goal, at 15:56 and 19:09. Mulvey's first goal came on the power play courtesy of a great centering pass from Rowe. The power play goal extended the Stingrays streak to seven straight games with a goal on the man-advantage.

A few minutes later, Mulvey struck again, deflecting in shot from the right point from Ruikka with under a minute left in the first period.

In the second period, the two teams traded goals with Brendan Ellis scoring on the power play for the Stingrays at 7:47. Ellis' fourth goal of the season was assisted by David Pacan and Jordan Kwas and gave the Stingrays a 4-0 lead. At 14:52, Dana Fraser scored the lone Adirondack goal of the evening, firing a shot from the slot area that beat a screened Dekanich.

However, just 1:02 after Fraser's goal, Jared Staal scored a highlight reel goal for the Stingrays to up the South Carolina lead to 5-1. The forward split a pair of Adirondack defenders, cut in on goal, and beat Simpson with a shot low along the ice for his fourth goal of the year. Both Kwas and Nick D'Agostino picked up their second assists of the evening on the goal.

Despite the big win, the Stingrays were outshot 31-18 in the game. Dekanich was strong in goal, stopping 30 shots to earn his eighth win of the season.

The game featured former Stingray great Cail MacLean coaching against his former club. MacLean played for the Stingrays from 2005-2008 and coached the club from 2008-2011. He was named Head Coach of Adirondack this summer.

The two teams meet again tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. in Adirondack before the Stingrays head to Reading to close a three-game weekend on Sunday at 4 p.m. Both games can be head on the Stingrays Broadcast Network via Mixlr.com/SCStingraysHockey or via ECHL.tv.
