Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release
Greenville, SC - The Greenville Swamp Rabbits (17-13-6), proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack, earned a point for the ninth time in the last 10 games, but suffered a 3-2 overtime loss to the Florida Everblades (25-11-0) at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena on Friday.
Florida's Mark Nemec netted the game-winning goal with just 47.8 seconds left in the extra frame, while Michael St. Croix and Darian Dziurzynski each scored in regulation for Greenville. With the loss, the Swamp Rabbits fell to 9-6-5 on SANDLAPPER Securities Rink.
Florida found the back of the net first when Brant Harris collected his 12th goal of the season at the 10:49 mark of the opening frame. Gabriel Desjardins created the attack when he skated to the left half-wall from below the circles and filtered a pass to the blue line, where a one-time drive from Harris beat former Everblades netminder Allen York. Maxime St. Cyr also recorded an assist on the tally.
The Swamp Rabbits responded less than two minutes later courtesy of St. Croix's sixth goal of the season at 12:21. Following a successful faceoff in the right circle, Andrew Dommett corralled the puck at the left hash marks and guided a pinpoint pass to the right post, where St. Croix redirected it to tie the game 1-1.
The Everblades regained their advantage late in the middle frame when Ryan Martindale recorded his fourth goal of the season at the 15:20 mark. After controlling Brendan O'Donnell's lead pass from the Florida zone, Martindale scampered across the blue line on a 1-on-2 rush and fired a low shot from the parameter that slipped through York's five-hole.
Greenville bounced back to even the game for a second time with just 11.7 seconds left in the second period thanks to Dziurzynski's eighth goal of the season. Vinny Saponari began the play with a brilliant lead pass to Dziurzynski, which found the fourth-year pro behind the Blades' defense and on a breakaway. Dziurzynski carried the puck to the slot and beat goaltender Anthony Peters glove side on the forehand for his second goal in as many days.
The third period featured 18 combined shots and end-to-end action from start to finish, but no goals. In fact, it wasn't until the 4:12 mark of overtime that Florida ended the game courtesy of Nemec's fourth tally of the season. Evan Bloodoff led a 2-on-1 rush down the ice when he entered the zone on the left wing before slipping a pass to Nemec on the right side, where he drilled home a one-timer for the 3-2 final.
Peters (13-8-0) made 38 saves in the victory, while York (2-4-2) stopped 22 shots in the overtime setback. In addition, Greenville went 0-for-3 on the power play, but 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
The Swamp Rabbits also outshot Florida 40-25.
