January 8, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kansas City Mavericks News Release
RAPID CITY, SD - The Missouri Mavericks held a close contest with the Rapid City Rush in their first match-up of the season against the South Dakota team; tying the game up 1-1 late in regulation to force an overtime decision, but ultimately falling short 2-1.
Missouri's 8-game win streak came to a close with the overtime loss. Still, their point-streak continues, adding 1 point to their 27-3-1-1 record (56 points) atop the ECHL standings.
The Rush scored midway through the opening period at 12:08, sneaking a loose puck past net-minder Stephon Williams, in his first appearance for the Mavs since he was assigned to Missouri by the Bridgeport Sound Tigers- the Missouri Mavericks American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate. Spencer Pommelis took the goal for the Rush, assisted by Danick Gauthier and Winston Day Chief.
The Mavericks were unable to tie the game through the remainder of the 1st period or for the 2nd twenty minutes of play with Danny Battachio stopping a collected 15 shots on goal by the Mavs. Williams kept Missouri in the game, holding the Rush to their 1-0 lead despite an onslaught of opportunities in the Mavs' zone in the 2nd frame.
Play evened out in the third period with a healthy amount of back-and-forth action to keep fans in the arena and watching from Kansas City, MO on the edge of their seats. Then with just 4:41 remaining in regulation, Tyler Barnes notched the equalizer for the Mavericks, aided by teammates Jesse Root and Rocco Carzo.
Barnes' 14th goal of the season not only tied the game, but tied him with Root as the leading goal-scorer for Missouri. Carzo and Barnes are tied for the team lead in assists (20 assists).
With neither side scoring for the rest of regulation, the game moved to a 5-minute period of sudden death 3-on-3 hockey. The Rush emerged victorious, scoring 2:46 into overtime to claim the extra point over the Mavs. Mikhail Stefanovich made the game-winning tally with the help of Pommelis and Michael Young.
The Missouri Mavericks face the Rapid City Rush again tomorrow evening at 8:05p.m. (CST) at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center for their second of three match-ups this season.
The Mavs' road trip extends until Friday. Jan. 22nd when they return home to Silverstein Eye Centers Arena to celebrate Mac's (mascot) Birthday! Join in on the fun and enjoy the company of special mascot guests and a youth hockey/mascot broom ball game during the first intermission of the game.
