Beast Earn a Point But Lose 4-3 to K-Wings in Overtime

KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN - The Brampton Beast outplayed the Kalamazoo Wings all night and outshot their opponents 40-20 but stellar goaltending from K-Wings starter Joel Martin was the difference as the Beast dropped a close 4-3 overtime decision on Friday night in Kalamazoo.
Reggie Traccitto led the way with a two-goal night, while Scott Howes picked up his team-leading twelfth goal of the season in the club's seventh overtime game in their last nine contests. Angelo Miceli and Travis Brown each recorded a pair of assists.
The Wings were the first to find the back of the net as Ludwig Blomstrand took a cross-ice pass from Curtis Valk and one-timed the puck behind Beast starting goaltender Trevor Cann just 2:37 into the game and nine seconds into the game's first power play.
The Beast got it back on the power play later in the period as Traccitto pounced on a juicy rebound and one-timed the loose puck behind Wings starter Joel Martin at 15:57.
The Beast played a strong defensive opening frame and allowed just four shots on goal, matching the lowest number of shots allowed in a period this season.
The Beast took a 2-1 lead near the midway point of the second period. The K-Wings penalty killers stood tall and managed to weather the storm and killed a two-minute 5-on-3 and an additional two-minute minor but as the final penalty expired, the Beast's persistence paid off as Scott Howes located the puck in the slot and lifted a perfect backhand shot behind Martin at 10:55.
The Beast defense stood tall for the second straight period as they just allowed six shots on goal but the final shot of the period off the stick of Blomstrand beat Cann high on the glove side, tying the game at 19:15.
Traccitto broke the tie and gave the Beast a 3-2 lead with a bullet from the point that eluded Martin on the glove side at 4:28 of the third period.
The Beast were far and away the dominant team throughout the contest but with the goaltender on the bench, Alex Mallet was alone in front and one-timed a shot from the slot that beat Cann, tying the game with just 43 seconds remaining in the game to tie it up at three.
Curtis Valk ended the game at 2:58 of the overtime period as he walked in on a partial breakaway and beat Cann stick side to give the K-Wings the victory.
K-Wings goaltender Martin made 37 saves to earn the win for Kalamazoo, while Cann stopped 16 between the pipes for the Beast.
Notes: The Beast finished the game 1-for-7 on the power play and 4-for-6 on the penalty kill.
The Beast will not have to wait very long to seek their revenge as the K-Wings visit the Powerade Centre tomorrow, Saturday, January 9 at 7:15 PM and again on Sunday, January 10 at 2:00 PM.
