
Stingrays Grab Point in Shootout Loss to Road Warriors

North Charleston, SC -The South Carolina Stingrays (15-14-1-1) erased a two-goal deficit and took the lead in the second period, but could not hold on as the Greenville Road Warriors (22-6-1-1) battled back to grab a 4-3 shootout victory in front of 3,137 at the North Charleston Coliseum Wednesday night.
The Road Warriors opened the scoring on the power play 2:04 into the first period when forward Justin Bowers fired a shot under the glove of Stingrays goaltender Todd Ford from the bottom of the left-wing circle. Forward Jimmy Kilpatrick and defenseman Wes Cunningham earned the assists. Road Warriors forward Sean Berkstresser made it 2-0 at 13:28 from defenseman Trevor Glass and Chris McKelvie.
The Stingrays scored three unanswered goals in the middle period to take a 3-2 lead into the second intermission. Defenseman Josh Godfrey cut the Greenville lead in half with an unassisted marker at 1:20 beating Road Warriors netminder Dov Grumet-Morris with a wrist shot from the right-wing point. Seconds later, forward Trent Campbell lit the lamp from defenseman Bryan Schmidt and forward David de Kastrozza at 2:14. Campbell grabbed his second of the night at 12:42 from forwards Rob Ricci and Tommy Goebel.
Bowers sent the contest to overtime with the game-tying tally at 8:36 of the third period from forward Mark Voakes and Kilpatrick. Neither side found the twine in overtime despite the Stingrays outshooting the Road Warriors 8-0 in the extra session. de Kastrozza and Ricci scored in the shootout, but the Road Warriors buried three chances to seal the victory.
Ford ended the night stopping 26 of 29 Road Warriors shots. Grumet-Morris improved to 14-3-0-1 kicking away 35 of 38 Stingrays opportunites. The Stingrays finshed the game 0-for-4 on the power play while Greenville went 1-for-5.
