Ontario Reign News Release
VICTORIA, BC - The Ontario Reign, proud affiliate of the NHL ¬â¢s Los Angeles Kings, scored six goals for the second straight game to defeat the Victoria Salmon Kings, 6-3, Tuesday night. Chaz Johnson put the Reign up for good with two quick goals in the second period and Kellen Briggs stopped point-blank shots to secure the win.
The Reign fell behind, 1-0, to the Salmon Kings at 6:35 of the first period, but came back with a vengeance. Jeff Corey, Lane Caffaro and Kyle Kraemer rattled off three goals in 5 minutes and 10 seconds to vault the Reign to a 3-1 lead.
Victoria inched its way back into the game, as Matt Siddall cut the Reign lead to 3-2 with a power play goal late in the first period and Chad Painchaud tied the game at 4:32 of the second.
The Salmon Kings seemed to control the pace of play in the period, but Chaz Johnson took a long lead pass from David Walker and sprinted toward the Victoria net, faked a cut across the crease and backhanded the puck over a sliding David Shantz to break the deadlock, 4-3. There wasn ¬â¢t even time to announce the goal when Johnson scored again to put the Reign up, 5-3.
Just 40 seconds later, Jordan Morrison tallied his fifth goal of the season. Both teams crashed the net as Shantz had trouble covering a puck in the crease. The puck bounced out to Morrison in the slot and he threw it over the pile of bodies and into the net. Johnson ¬â¢s seventh and eighth goals of the season came just 17 seconds apart and all three goals were scored in only 57 seconds.
The Reign held on to win 6-3, thanks in large part to the play of goaltender, Kellen Briggs. Briggs stopped 47 of the 50 shots he faced, including a relentless barrage which came on back-to-back Victoria power plays half way through the third period. Shantz made 22 saves in the loss.
Tonight's three stars were: 1. ONT - Kellen Briggs 2. ONT - Chaz Johnson 3. VIC - Matt Siddall
