Stingrays Add NHL Prospect in Goaltender Pheonix Copley; Ellis Returns from AHL

North Charleston, S.C. - The South Carolina Stingrays signed goaltender Phoenix Copley and defenseman Brendan Ellis returned to the team from the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League (AHL), Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Spencer Carbery announced today.

Copley, 22, attended Michigan Tech of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) the last two seasons and earned a 10-13-6 record in 30 appearances with the Huskies this season. The North Pole, Alaska, native, stood sixth in the WCHA in goals-against average (2.51) and seventh with a .911 save percentage. During his freshman campaign, Copley grabbed an 8-15-1 post with a 3.22 goals-average and .900 save percentage. Prior to joining the NCAA ranks, he skated two seasons of junior hockey with the Corpus Christi IceRays, Tri-City Storm and Des Moines Buccaneers.

Last month, Copley signed a two-year, entry-level contract with the National Hockey League's (NHL) Washington Capitals starting next season and joined the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL) on a tryout agreement. Copley will wear jersey No. 31 with the Stingrays.

After making his professional debut and skating in three games with the Stingrays two weeks ago, Ellis, 25, appeared in one game with the Monarchs adding no points. The Kelowna, British Columbia, native has one assist with the Stingrays. Ellis recently completed a four-year collegiate career with Merrimack College totaling 58 points (seven goals, 51 assists) in 133 games and served as an alternate captain during the 2012-13 campaign.

The Stingrays travel to Estero, Florida to battle the Florida Everblades tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Germain Arena and celebrate Fan Appreciation Night and The Post and Courier Hall of Fame Night on Friday, April 11 against the Elmira Jackals at the North Charleston Coliseum.
