Condon Closes Door on Walleye Again
April 2, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV- 24 hours had passed, but when the final buzzer sounded, Wednesday night's script looked very similar to Tuesday's at WesBanco Arena. Mike Condon turned away all 31 shots he faced, earning his fifth shutout of the season and second in a row, as the Wheeling Nailers blanked the Toledo Walleye, 3-0. Christiaan Minella, Tyler Fernandez, and Tom Kuhnhackl were the goal scorers.
The Nailers scored the lone goal of the first period, needing just 4:22 to connect for their lone opening period marker of the homestand. Sahir Gill went to work behind the net, before centering a pass to Christiaan Minella in the slot. Minella whipped a shot into the left side of the goal, giving him ten goals in 19 games this season. Dustin Stevenson also grabbed an assist, while Gill pulled within one point of 50 in his rookie campaign.
40 seconds into the middle frame, Wheeling turned on the red light again. Shane Bakker dished the puck to Tyler Fernandez, who powered a one-timer from the left side of the slot, ringing his 12th of the season off of the far post and into the net. The goal extended Tyler's point streak to six games, while Chaz Johnson earned an assist for his seventh consecutive contest with at least one point.
With 5:26 gone by in the third, the Nailers added one more insurance goal. Denver Manderson chipped the puck to the front of the net, leading to a scrum in the crease. Tom Kuhnhackl was the final Wheeling player to make contact with the puck, as he was credited with his sixth goal of the season. Jake Areshenko also assisted on the markers, as the Nailers completed the 3-0 victory.
Mike Condon earned his second shutout in as many nights and fifth of the season, as he stopped all 31 shots he faced for Wheeling. The shutout was also Condon's third straight at home, as his streaks sit at 125:57 overall and 225:54 at WesBanco Arena without allowing an opposition goal. Jared Coreau suffered the loss for Toledo, making 27 saves on 30 shots.
The Nailers will continue their six-game homestand on Friday night, when they face the Evansville IceMen at 7:00.
