Squirrels Defeat Aeros, 9-5 in 11 innings

Akron, OH -Richmond's Nick Liles lined a go-ahead two-run single in the 11th inning to give Richmond a 9-5 victory over Akron Monday night at Canal Park.

Richmond grabbed an early lead in the first inning, and never trailed after that. Richmond increased their lead to 5-0 by the fourth inning on the strength of a three-run third inning. Akron ended their streak of 14 consecutive scoreless innings with a run in the sixth inning, and followed that up with runs scored in both the seventh and eighth innings. After a three-run seventh, the Aeros tied the score at 5-5, where it remained until the Squirrels scored four runs in the 11th.

Liles singled to center off Bryce Stowell, scoring Ehire Adrianza and Johnny Monell. The Squirrels continued their rally with two more runs to put the game out of reach.

Richmond starter Justin Fitzgerald pitched six effective innings, allowing four hits and one run, while walking and striking out four batters apiece. Relievers Brett Bochy, Tom Vessella, and Edwin Quirarte combined for 3 2/3 shutout innings. Vessella (3-2) earned the win for Richmond.

Aeros starter Steven Wright worked six innings, allowing five runs, but four earned. a season-high five batters. Wright yielded seven hits and three walks yet struck out six batters.

Rob Bryson relieved Wright in the seventh inning and worked three perfect innings, not allowing a base runner while striking out six batters. The Aeros also got a perfect inning from right-hander Preston Guilmet who faced three batters and fanned two.

Stowell (1-1) took the loss and left the game with an injury after just 1/3 inning pitched. Bryan Price yielded no earned runs, but allowed two runs charged to Stowell to score.

Richmond designated hitter Monell hit his fifth home run of the season, and four batters recorded multi-hit nights for the Flying Squirrels.

Matt Lawson, Adam Abraham, and Roberto Perez each had two hits to lead the Aeros attack, which out-hit Richmond 12 to 11. The hit parade did not translate to more runs, as the Aeros stranded 11 men on base.

The Aeros will conclude their current eight game homestand and four game series when they face the Flying Squirrels on Tuesday evening at 7:05. LHP Chris Gloor (1-1, 2.65) will start for Richmond, while RHP Brett Brach (3-3, 3.49) will take the hill for Akron.
