Eastern League Names Pitcher and Player of the Week

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of June 25th through July 1st:

Akron Aeros outfielder Thomas Neal has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of June 25th-July 1st. The 6'2", 220 lb. slugger batted .500 (14-for-28) with six doubles, three homers, 10 RBI, seven runs scored, three walks and a 1.036 slugging percentage in seven games for the Aeros last week. Neal, who is a native of Inglewood, California, kicked off his week by homering in consecutive games on Monday and Tuesday and went on to reach base in all seven games he played in last week. He also drove in or scored at least one run in six of those games and had five multiple hit performances. The 24-year old led all Eastern League players in batting average (.500), hits (14), extra-base hits (9), total bases (29), slugging percentage (1.036) and OPS (1.598) last week. He also finished ranked among the weekly leaders in doubles (6-tied 1st), homers (3-tied 1st), RBI (10-tied 1st), on-base percentage (.563-2nd) and runs scored (7-tied 3rd). Thomas, who is batting .307 with 16 doubles, six homers, 42 runs scored and 32 RBI in 64 games with the Aeros this season, was acquired by the Cleveland Indians in a trade with San Francisco for Orlando Cabrera on July 30, 2011. He was originally drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 36th round of the 2005 draft.

Vidal Nuno, a left-handed starting pitcher for the Trenton Thunder, has been selected as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of June 25th-July 1st. The 24-year old started two games for the Thunder last week and had a record of 1-0 with 12 strikeouts and a 1.46 ERA. Nuno, who is a native of National City, California, made his first appearance of the week on Monday against the visiting Portland Sea Dogs and surrendered just two hits and one walk while striking out six over seven shutout innings to earn the win in Trenton's 7-1 victory. In his second start of the week on Sunday at Portland the 5'11", 195 lb. hurler gave up two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out six over 5.2 innings pitched. When he left the game he was in line for the win but went on to pick up a no-decision in Trenton's 6-3, 11-inning victory. Nuno's 12 strikeouts tied for the league lead last week and he also ranked second among all pitchers in WHIP (0.57) and batting average against (.140). Vidal, who has a record of 3-1 with a 1.18 ERA in eight starts since being promoted to Trenton from Class-A Tampa on May 21st, was signed by the New York Yankees as a free agent on June 18, 2011. He was originally drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 48th round of the 2009 draft.
