New Britain, CT - The Bowie Baysox (42-40) used a big fifth inning to beat the New Britain Rock Cats (44-37) 11-2 on Monday night.
The Rock Cats got out to the early lead in the top of the first inning. With two outs, Oswaldo Arcia tripled and then scored on an RBI single by Chris Colabello to make the score 1-0.
In the fourth inning, the Baysox took the lead. With the bases loaded and one out, Manny Machado hit a two-run single to give the Baysox a 2-1 lead.
The Baysox broke the game open when they scored six runs with two outs in the fifth inning. Josh Barfield started the scoring with an RBI single that knocked in Antoan Richardson. After Robbie Widlansky doubled to put two runners on, Machado hit another RBI single. Rhyne Hughes followed with a two-run double and then Buck Britton hit a two-run home run to cap the scoring in the inning and make the score 8-1.
In the sixth, the Rock Cats got one run back on an RBI single by Evan Bigley to make the score 8-2.
The Baysox added to the lead in the ninth inning. They loaded up the bases with one out in the inning and then Hughes hit a two-run single. With two outs in the inning, Jai Miller hit an RBI single that extended the lead to 11-2.
Chris Petrini picked up the win, throwing three innings in relief and allowing one run on four hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
Shairon Martis got the loss. He allowed eight runs, six earned on eight hits with five strikeouts and three walks.
Tomorrow, the Baysox will wrap up their eight-game road trip tomorrow when RHP Bobby Bundy (2-9, 4.79) takes on LHP Blake Martin (2-3, 3.31).
They will return home on Wednesday, July 4 at 6:05 p.m. against the Harrisburg Senators. Tickets are on sale now for the Independence Day celebration that will feature an apple pie eating contest, fireworks and much more.
