Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
BINGHAMTON, NY - The Binghamton Mets stranded ten men, including the bases loaded in the ninth inning, and went 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position in a 6-2 loss to the Altoona Curve Monday night at NYSEG Stadium. The B-Mets have lost seven straight and dropped nine in a row at home.
Binghamton compounded their lack of clutch hitting with shaky defense throughout the game. The B-Mets matched a season-high with four errors, leading to three unearned runs.
Wilmer Flores' throwing error in the first set the table for a two-run frame for the Curve. With two aboard, Matt Curry sent a slow roller to third, Flores' throw skipped past Jefry Marte at first and rolled down the line, allowing a run to score. Roman Cabrera brought in the second run on a ground out.
The Curve extended their lead in the third against B-Mets starter Gonzalez Germen. Brock Holt launched a solo home run, his second of the season, making it 3-0.
Binghamton took advantage of an Altoona error to plate their first run in the bottom of the inning. Juan Centeno made it to second when Matt Curry failed to catch a throw from Stefan Welch at third. Juan Lagares drove Centeno home with a two-out single to center against starter Gerrit Cole.
After Altoona scored another run in the fourth, the B-Mets offered a rebuttal in the sixth. Eric Campbell led off the frame with a single and scored when Flores shot a double down the third base line. Cole recorded two more outs before being lifted for Nathan Baker who ended the inning. Cole allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and struck out five in 5.2 innings.
Two more B-Mets errors led to another Curve run in the seventh, Germen's final frame. The righty surrendered five runs (three earned) and matched a season-high with eight hits allowed. Ryan Fraser threw a scoreless eighth before a Reese Havens' error led to an unearned run in the ninth.
After going down quietly in the seventh and eighth, Binghamton threatened against reliever Hunter Strickland in the ninth. With two outs, the B-Mets loaded the bases on two singles and a walk. The rally quickly fizzled when Marte bounced out to the mound to end the game.
Cole (2-1) collected his second win and first on the road. Germen (4-6) suffered his second straight loss and maintained his streak of factoring into the decision in each of his B-Met appearances. Strickland collected the six-out save, his first career save since April 2009.
The B-Mets (36-45) look to avoid a winless homestand Tuesday night at 6:35 PM. LHP Darin Gorski takes the mound against RHP Brandon Cumpton. The Horizons Federal Credit Union pre-game show begins at 6:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
