LAST GAME: Former New York Mets farmhand Stefan Welch blasted a pair of two-run home runs to lead the Altoona Curve past the B-Mets by a 7-4 score yesterday at NYSEG Stadium. The defeat was Binghamton's sixth in a row and eighth straight at home. Starter Cory Mazzoni was tagged for six runs on nine hits over four innings in his second loss of the homestand. Spot starter Matt McSwain went five innings for Altoona, allowing three runs on seven hits to collect his third win of the season. The B-Mets had the tying run at the plate or on base in both the eighth and ninth innings, but failed to score against reliever Vic Black, who earned his fifth save of the year.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Gonzalez Germen (4-5, 4.06) makes his ninth start as a B-Met and second against the Curve. Germen had his three-game winning streak snapped in a loss in his most recent start versus the Bowie Baysox on June 27. The righty allowed four runs on six hits and struck out three over five innings. Germen defeated the Curve on June 15, surrendering three runs (one earned) on eight hits over six innings. He struck out six and did not issue a walk. Germen was promoted from St. Lucie (High-A) on May 4 after going 3-0 with a 3.04 ERA in five games (four starts) with St. Lucie.
RHP Gerrit Cole (1-1, 7.50) makes his third start as a member of the Curve. The righty lost his previous start against the Harrisburg Senators on June 26. He was pulled after one inning after being struck by a line drive. He surrendered three runs on five hits and struck out two in his only frame. Cole won his Double-A debut on June 20 against the New Britain Rock Cats. The California native was the first overall pick in last year's draft, signing for a club-record $8 million He made his pro debut this year with the Bradenton Marauders (High-A). The righty went 5-1 with a 2.55 ERA in 13 starts before getting promoted to Altoona in mid-June.
SLIP SLIDIN' AWAY: Yesterday's defeat extended Binghamton's losing streak to a season-long six games. It is the longest skid for the B-Mets since they dropped eight in a row in May 2011.
SLUMPING AT HOME: The B-Mets losing streak at home stretched to eight games with their loss to Altoona yesterday. It is the longest home losing skid since August & September 2004. Binghamton ended their season by dropping their final 10 home games, finishing the year with a 38-33 home record. Binghamton's last win at NYSEG Stadium came against the Altoona Curve, a 4-3 final on June 15.
WELCOME BACK: The B-Mets enjoyed the return of first baseman Allan Dykstrayesterday. Activated on June 30, Dykstra missed 59 games with a left forearm fracture suffered in a game against the Portland Sea Dogs on April 14. He went 1-for-3 with a single, a hit-by-pitch and walk yesterday.
ON THE BRIGHT SIDE: The B-Mets did commit an error in yesterday's game. It snapped a streak of seven-straight games with at least one error. Binghamton had made nine errors in the first five games of the homestand.
EXACTING REVENGE: Stefan Welch, a former Mets farmhand, went 4-for-5 yesterday with two home runs and four RBI. Welch played five seasons in the New York Mets' system, topping out by spending 2.5 season with the St. Lucie Mets (High-A). He never played for the B-Mets.
WASTED HITS: The B-Mets matched a season-high for most hits in a losing effort. Binghamton last collected 13 hits in a 4-3 loss to the Harrisburg Senators on June 6.
HITS GALORE: The B-Mets have allowed nine hits or more in ten straight games.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets wrap up their four-game set against the Curve and complete an eight-game homestand tomorrow night at 6:35 PM. LHP Darin Gorski takes the mound for Binghamton against RHP Kyle McPherson.
