Altoona Curve News Release
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Altoona Curve RHP Gerrit Cole bounced back from a rough outing last Tuesday in Harrisburg to help lead the Curve to their fifth-straight victory with a, 6-2, win over the B-Mets on Monday night at NYSEG Stadium. Cole (2-1) retired the first seven men he faced and wound up finishing 5.2 innings while allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits with five strikeouts.
Altoona, who had scored 40 runs in five prior games against the B-Mets this season, wasted no time once again getting on the board with two runs off starter Gonzlaez Germen (4-6) in the first. Drew Maggi reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second on a Brock Holt single and scored on a Matt Curry ball hit to third for an infield single. Maggi was able to score because B-Mets third baseman Wilmer Flores threw errantly up the first-base line on Curry's infield single and Maggi walked in for the game's first run.
With Holt now at third and Curry at second via the throwing error, Ramon Cabrera grounded out to the right side to bring him in and the lead was 2-0.
While Cole worked a scoreless first and second, the Curve offense gave him another run to work with in the third when Holt connected for his second home run of the year with a solo shot to right and all the sudden it was 3-0.
The B-Mets pushed an unearned run across in the bottom of the third when Juan Centeno reached on a missed catch error by Curry. Two batters later, Juan Lagares made the error hurt as he singled in Centeno to put the B-Mets on the board.
The Curve once again had an answer in the fourth when Evan Chambers brought Cabrera in with an RBI fielder's choice and the lead was once again three at, 4-1.
Binghamton did score once more in the sixth off Cole but that ended their scoring on the night as the Curve bullpen duo of Nathan Baker and Hunter Strickland kept them off the scoreboard. Strickland picked up his first Double-A save in the process and worked around a bases-loaded, two-out jam in the ninth.
Curry led the offense on Monday with three hits while Holt, Cabrera and Stefan Welch each contributed with two-hit days.
Looking for the sweep, a sixth straight win and a 500 record, Altoona (40-41) will take on Binghamton (36-45) in the finale of the four-game series beginning at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday night at NYSEG Stadium. All-Star RHP Brandon Cumpton (8-6, 3.21) will get the ball for the Curve as he'll look to win two straight starts. Binghamton counters in the finale with LHP Darin Gorski (5-4, 4.14), who has faced the Curve once previously in 2012.
Airtime on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. For tickets and more information on the upcoming Curve homestand as well as the Ballpark Blockparty 2012, call 877.99.CURVE, visit AltoonaCurve.com or stop by the box office windows at Peoples Natural Gas Field.
