Atlanta Gladiators News Release
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Sports Illustrated and the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) will unveil a national sports announcement at the Gwinnett Gladiators final regular season home game, Saturday, April 3, 2004 (8:05 p.m. game time) at the Arena at Gwinnett Center. The announcement is planned for 8:30 p.m.
Sports Illustrated has chosen Gwinnett County as their "Sportstown for Georgia", part of the magazine's 50th Anniversary celebration. The announcement is planned to take place between the first and second periods of the hockey game, with Brett Wilson, Southeastern Advertising Director for Sports Illustrated, Marvin Billups, past president of NRPA, Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners Chairman F. Wayne Hill, Gwinnett County Parks & Recreation and the Gwinnett Sports Commission on hand for the presentation.
Fifty Sports Illustrated Sportstowns â one from each state â will be announced from July 2003 to July 2004. The selections are made by both Sports Illustrated and NRPA based on a variety of criteria that demonstrates a community's involvement in facilitating and enhancing quality sports. Communities are judged in the following categories: philosophy, policy/procedures, education and training strategies, youth development strategies, community commitment to parks and recreation resources, innovations for community development, and scope of programming.
Each Sportstown recipient will be honored with a cash grant, recognition in Sports Illustrated magazine and online at www.SI.com and with a special commemorative road sign that recognizes the community as an official Sports Illustrated Sportstown.
Gwinnett County is the 38th to receive a Sports Illustrated Sportstown designation and Georgia is the 38th state to be profiled in the magazine's special editorial section featuring Georgia's sports landscape. The special Georgia section will appear in the April 12 issue. SI.com's profile of Georgia and Gwinnett County will be posted online at SI.com/50 on April 6.
