Stroshein Is 251st ECHL Player To Play In NHL

PRINCETON, N.J. – Former Mobile and Richmond right wing Garret Stroshein became the 251st ECHL player to advance and play in the National Hockey League when he made his debut with Washington on Thursday. Stroshein had two shots and seven penalty minutes in 11 shifts in the Capitals 3-3 tie at Boston.

Stroshein becomes the fifth ECHL player to make his NHL debut with Washington this season, and is the 36th player in 2003-04 to play in the NHL after playing in the ECHL. The previous high for ECHL players making their first NHL appearance was 27 players in 1999-2000 and 2000-01.

Prior to his call-up to Washington, Stroshein had two points (1g-1a) and 73 penalty minutes in 33 games with Portland of the American Hockey League. He scored one point (0g-1a) and had 86 penalty minutes in 28 regular season games for Portland and six penalty minutes in two playoff games in 2002-03.

Stroshein had 13 penalty minutes in three games with Mobile in 2001-02 and seven penalty minutes in two games with Richmond in 2002-03. The 6-7 and 245-pound Stroshein had five penalty minutes in five games with San Diego in 2000-01 and 90 penalty minutes in 24 games with San Diego in 2001-02. He scored one point (1g-0a) and had 67 penalty minutes in 20 regular season games for Fresno in 2001-02 and had two penalty minutes in four playoff games with Bakersfield in 2001-02.

There have been 104 ECHL players that have played in the NHL in 2003-04 including 31 goaltenders. There have been 10 players, including eight goaltenders, who have played in both the ECHL and the NHL in 2003-04, doubling the high of five players in 2001-02. There were 53 former ECHL players on NHL opening-day rosters surpassing the record of 50 players set in 2002-03.

There are nine ECHL coaches in the NHL, including Carolina Hurricanes Head Coach Peter Laviolette and Florida Panthers Interim Head Coach John Torchetti, and there are 13 referees and three linesmen with ECHL experience on the 2003-04 NHL officiating staff. The ECHL has affiliations with 21 of the 30 teams in the NHL in 2003-04 and there has been an ECHL player on each of the 30 NHL teams in 2003-04.

There have been 36 players in 2003-04 that have made their first NHL appearance since playing in the ECHL.
