San Diego's Pederson Wins ECHL Sportsmanship Award

PRINCETON, N.J. – The ECHL on Friday announced that San Diego left wing Mark Pederson of the San Diego Gulls is the recipient of the 2003-04 ECHL Sportsmanship Award as determined in a vote of ECHL coaches. The ECHL Sportsmanship Award is presented annually to the player who is judged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship combined with a high standard of playing ability.

Bobby Brown of Louisiana finished second while Peoria's Greg Day and Randy Rowe were third and fourth in the voting.

Named to the All-ECHL Second Team on Thursday, Pederson has 36 penalty minutes in 69 games and leads the ECHL with 44 goals and 18 power-play goals. Selected in the first round (15th overall) by Montreal in the 1986 National Hockey League Entry Draft, Pederson ranks sixth in the league in scoring with 81 points (44g-37a). He is tied for fourth in the league with eight game-winning goals and is tied for fifth with 32 power-play points (18g-14a). The 6-2 and 210-pound Pederson leads the team with 81 points (44g-37a), power-play points with 32 (18g-14a), game-winning goals with eight and is tied for the team lead in plus-minus rating with +16.
