PROVIDENCE, RI - Jeremy Colliton's two goals late in the third period forced overtime, but Jamie Arniel's tally in the third round of the shootout turned out to be the game winner as the Providence Bruins hung on for a 4-3 shootout win over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence on Friday night. With the win, Providence improves to 30-30-2-3. The Sound Tigers snap their six-game losing streak and now sit at 21-35-3-5.

Providence took the lead midway through the first period via the power play. Providence center Trent Whitfield won the faceoff in the offensive zone back to Jamie Arniel, who skated in by the left faceoff circle and fired a shot past Mikko Koskinen inside the right post to give the Bruins the 1-0 lead headed to the second period.

Both sides had multiple power play opportunities in the second period, but neither side was able to break through. Jesse Joensuu had the best scoring chance for the Sound Tigers on the man-advantage, but fired a shot off the side of the net from a sharp angle below the left faceoff circle. Koksinen was spun down behind the Sound Tigers net in the final seconds of the period and was replaced by Joel Martin who remained in net for the rest of the period and the game.

Providence pushed their lead to two early in the third period. Zach Hamill camped out in front of Martin and one-timed a feed from Max Sauve to make the score 2-0 3:35 into the third. The Sound Tigers would answer with a power-play goal at 8:23. Joensuu held the puck above the right faceoff circle and fed the puck cross-ice to Rhett Rakhshani, who one-timed it past Anton Khudobin for his team-leading 15th goal to cut the deficit to 2-1. However, Providence responded just 1:06 later. The Sound Tigers were unable to clear their zone, leading to a 2-on-1 and Jordan Caron snapped the puck past Martin to give the Bruins a 3-1 lead.

However, Jeremy Colliton would carry the Sound Tigers back into the game. First, Colliton deflected Mark Katic's shot from the point on the power play to make the score 3-2 with 3:47 left in the game. Then with Martin pulled from the Sound Tigers net, Robin Figren found Colliton streaking to the net and the Sound Tigers assistant captain deflected the pass past Khudobin to tie the score with 24.1 seconds left in regulation. Neither side was able to net the game-winner in the extra session, sending the game to a shootout. Hamill and Arniel scored in the first and third rounds, and Robin Figren scored in the fourth round. But Khudobin stopped Romano in the fifth round to win the game for Providence, despite protests from the Sound Tigers that Khudobin threw his stick at the puck twice in the shootout, including on Romano's attempt which ended the game.

Sound Tigers continue their road trip tomorrow night in Manchester against the Monarchs at 7 p.m.
