P-Bruins Tame Sound Tigers 4-3

Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 4-3 in a shootout on Friday evening at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in front of 8,520 fans. The P-Bruins received goals from Jamie Arniel, Zach Hamill and Jordan Caron in regulation and Arniel and Hamill in the five-round shootout.

The physical play from last Sunday's penalty-filled contest between the two clubs carried over to this evening's play as both teams spent considerable time in the sin-bin. After opening minutes of back and forth play, Providence turned on the jets and started firing on Bridgeport goalie Mikko Koskinen. Following a few near chances, the P-Bruins found the back of the net on the power play for the fourth consecutive game, a season-high. Alternate captain Trent Whitfield won the face-off in the Bridgeport zone back to Arniel, who fired a one-timer past Koskinen at 11:41 of the period to give the P-Bruins a 1-0 lead.

In the second period, each team saw equal time on the power play and penalty kill. Despite the man-advantages, neither team could light the lamp. Anton Khudobin was strong between the pipes throughout the frame, highlighted by denying Bridgeport's Rhett Rakhshani on a breakaway.

After a scoreless second frame, Providence took a two-goal lead just 3:35 into the third when Hamill beat Joel Martin - on in relief of an injured Koskinen - with a shot from the slot. Maxime Sauvé and Ryan Donald assisted on Hamill's seventh goal of the season. The shutout was short lived as Bridgeport's Rakhshani scored on the power play at 8:23 of the frame. Providence retook its two-goal lead just over a minute later when Caron left Martin looking with a shot from the low slot. Sauvé and Donald collected the assists on the play. However, Bridgeport fought to the end and Jeremy Colliton scored two unanswered goals in a span of three minutes to tie the game with less than one minute to play, sending the contest into overtime.

Despite two minutes of 4-on-3 action in the five-minute overtime, Providence could not light the lamp, forcing a shootout to decide the game. Hamill opened the scoring in the shootout, followed by Arniel. With a near-perfect performance from Khudobin, the goals from Hamill and Arniel were enough for the win.

Khudobin earned the win, his fifth in a row, blocking 20 shots through overtime and four in the shootout. Martin suffered the loss, stopping 16 of 18 attempts in 24:30 of play, and three of five in the shootout.
