Pirates Power Past Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, MA ‚¬" Luke Adam and Brian Roloff each scored twice to lead the Portland Pirates to a 5-3 win over the Springfield Falcons in an American Hockey League game played tonight in front of 4,362 at the MassMutual Center.

Mark Voakes also scored for the Pirates while Marc-Andre Gragnani collected a pair of assists. Portland improved to 39-17-5-2 with their fifth straight win. The victory, combined with Manchester ‚¬â„¢s 3-1 loss to Worcester, moved the Pirates into first place in the Atlantic Division.

Tomas Kubalik, Steven Goertzen and Kyle Wilson replied for the Falcons, now winless in five and 30-30-2-3 overall.

The Pirates jumped out quickly as Roloff scored just 18 seconds into the game to give Portland a 1-0 lead. Kubalik evened the count seven minutes into the period only to see Adam restore the Pirates one-goal advantage just 30 seconds later. Voakes, with his third in as many games, struck 64 seconds after that to complete the first-period scoring and give the Pirates a 3-1 lead after one. Roloff ‚¬â„¢s second of the game early in the second upped the Pirates lead to 4-1. Goertzen connected midway through the period to cut the Pirates lead to two but just 26 seconds later Adam ‚¬â„¢s second of the game put Portland up 5-2, a lead they carried into the third. Wilson completed the scoring with the lone goal of the third.

The Pirates out shot the Falcons 29-27 as David Leggio posted his 10th straight victory.

The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the Game were 1. Adam, 2. Wilson and 3. Roloff.

The Pirates will return to the Civic Center for two divisional games this weekend, beginning on tomorrow (Saturday) at 7 p.m. when the Providence Bruins come to town. It ‚¬â„¢s another Bud Light Hockey Night in Portland and the first 5,000 fans into the game will receive a Pirates poster courtesy of the Portland Press Herald.

First-place in the Atlantic Division may be on the line Sunday when the Manchester Monarchs visit for a 4 p.m. start.
