Milwaukee Admirals News Release
Milwaukee, WI -- The eighth place Rockford IceHogs got the best of the first place Admirals in their last meeting at the Bradley Center this season, as they won 2-0 on Friday night behind 28 saves from netminder Hannu Toivonen. The loss marks the first time since November 21 and 23 of this season that the Admirals have dropped back-to-back games in regulation and it was their fourth consecutive home defeat.
The first two frames featured a battle of the netminders as 41 tough shots were turned away by both Admirals goalie Mark Dekanich and Toivonen, as both goaltenders took a shutout into the third period.
At 12:41 into third on the Admirals first and only penalty of the game the IceHogs were able to beat a stingy Ads penalty kill unit for what proved to be the game winner. Rockford's all-time leading scorer Brian Connelly took the puck up the ice from Toivonen and settled in at the right point where he wound up and blasted a shot over the glove-side shoulder of Dekanich to get the first marker of the game.
Then with under a minute to play and the Ads with an extra attacker the IceHogs managed to get an empty net goal from Igor Makarov to put the game out of reach.
Toivonen (14-13-4), who has played well as of late, earned his third shutout of the season and picked up his fourth win in six games, and his fourteenth overall.
Dekanich (22-11-5) recorded 32 saves and was able to keep the Admirals in the game as he went save-for-save with Toivonen before giving up the goal to Connelly and eventually taking the loss.
The Admirals are off on Saturday before returning to the ice on Sunday afternoon at 5:00 pm when they host the Peoria Rivermen at the BC.
