Syracuse Crunch News Release

Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Crunch and Texas Stars battled through a scoreless 65 minutes of play, until the Crunch exploded for four goals in the shootout, edging Texas by a 1-0 score to secure their third straight win tonight at The Oncenter War Memorial Arena.

J.P. Levasseur stopped all 34 shots he faced in regulation and overtime and denied two of five Texas shooters to pick up his fifth shutout of the season, tying him for third in the AHL in that category and fourth on the Crunch's all-time list. Five of Levasseur's nine wins on the season have come by way of the shutout.

Texas jumped out to control play early, looking to avenge its 3-1 loss to the Crunch in Cedar Park this past Monday. The Stars dominated the first period in shots by a 15-3 margin, but could not get the puck past Levasseur.

The Crunch came out much better in the second stanza and outshot the visitors 13-11, but again neither club could convert at even strength or on the power play. Both teams wound up 0-for-6 with the man-advantage on the night.

The game was still scoreless late in the third when Brian McGrattan gave Texas one last opportunity on the power play after getting called for tripping with just 1:57 left in regulation, but the Crunch were able to kill off the penalty and take the game to overtime.

Both teams had chances in the extra session, with Texas outshooting the Crunch 5-4 as the game headed to a shootout to decide the winner.

Both goalies gave up three goals to each of the first four shooters they faced. Patrick Maroon, who almost lost control of the puck as he skated in alone, beat Richard Bachman with a forehand deke in the top of the fifth round and Levasseur stuffed Jordie Benn in the bottom of the fifth to seal the win.
