Springfield Falcons News Release

The Springfield Falcons fell behind early and despite a third period rally, the early deficit was just a bit too much as the Portland Pirates skated away with a 5-3 win over the Falcons in front of 4,362 at the MassMutual Center on Friday night. Kyle Wilson collected one goal and one assist for Springfield after returning from the Columbus Blue Jackets Friday afternoon.

The Pirates came out strong right from the opening faceoff and took a 1-0 lead just 18-seconds into the first period when Brian Roloff scored his third goal of the year. The Falcons battled back nicely when Tomas Kubalik tied the score at 1-1 when Wilson put a perfect pass on his stick at the 7:00 mark of the opening period. The Pirates answered right back just 30-seconds later when Luke Adam scored his 22nd goal of the campaign giving Portland a 2-1 lead. Both Kubalik and Adam remain in the top three in rookie scoring in the AHL this year.

Mark Voakes would expand Portland's lead to 3-1 at 8:34 of the first period when he tallied his third marker of the year.

In the second period, Portland built a 4-1 lead at 4:51 when Roloff scored his second goal of the night, but Steven Goertzen cut the Falcons' deficit to 4-2 when he tallied his fifth goal of the year at 11:27 of the middle frame. Just five seconds after Goertzen inched Springfield closer, Adam converted his second goal of the night and 23rd on the campaign giving the Pirates a 5-2 lead through 40 minutes.

Just 5:24 into the third period, the Falcons pulled to within 5-3 when Wilson scored his 12th goal of the year, but that was as close as the Falcons would get on this night.
